PAUL KELLY JOINS THE LINE UP FOR THE LIVING LEGENDS SERIES AT THE TOTE THIS WEEKEND!
Paul Kelly will be performing a few songs this Sunday afternoon, July 13th at the Tote on Charlie Owen’s night which is part of the Living Legends Series honouring the careers of three Melbourne based musicians. Also added to the line up for Sunday is Wishful featuring Paul Kelly’s daughters Memphis and Maddy Kelly who will be playing songs linked to Owen.
The Drones’ Gareth Liddiard will be teaming up with founding Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds member Mick Harvey as well as the Beasts of Bourbon’s Brian Hooper to play a set of Kim Salmon penned tunes on Friday July 11th which includes the Scientists, Kim Salmon & the Surrealists and the Beasts of Bourbon. Machine Translations will also be performing the songs of Kim Salmon and will also be joined by Dan Kelly for a set of surprises.
Saturday July 12th will be all about Spencer P Jones at the Tote. Many acts from interstate and local will be paying homage to Spencer including his own group, the Escape Committee with Helen Cattanach, Dave Nicholls and Michael Hubbard backing up guest performers including Adalita, Sly Faulkner, Dan Brodie, Geoff Corbett and Brian Hooper as well as short sets by the likes of the Sons of Lee Marvin playing the Johnnys, Sydney group Greta Mob playing Beasts of Bourbon and The Pink Tiles take on the Last Gasp.
The Leaps and Bounds Music Festival presents the Living Legends series across three consecutive nights at the Tote honouring three renowned Melbourne based musicians with worldwide reputations. Kim Salmon, Spencer P Jones and Charlie Owen, we salute you.
The honoured musicians themselves will not be performing on the night – but they will be present on the night. It is a coincidence that the three are or have been guitarists in the Australian super-group the Beasts of Bourbon, each player has been prolific for over 30 years and have an incredible musical catalogue.
Each night will have a focus on one of the ‘living legends’:
Friday 11th July: Honours Kim Salmon with a cast of musicians playing from his catalogue which includes the Scientists, Kim Salmon & the Surrealists, Antenna, the Business, the Darling Downs, Salmon and Beasts of Bourbon. The Scientists, formed by Kim Salmon in the late 70s, are considered precursors of grunge. Peformers: Gareth Liddiard, Mick Harvey, Brian Hooper, Machine Translations, Caroline Kennedy, Penny Ikinger, Tex Napalm, the Bulls, Midnight Scavengers, Andrew McCubbin, Suzie Stapleton, Marilyn Rose and the Thorns, Teenage Libido, the Braves and more. Saturday 12th July sees Spencer P Jones appreciated which includes the music of the Johnnys, Beasts of Bourbon, Hell to Pay, as well as Spencer P Jones with the Last Gasp, Cow Penalty, the Escape Committee and the Nothing Butts. Performers include Adalita, Chris Russell, Sly Faulkner, Dan Brodie, Geoff Corbett (SixFtHick, Bris), Phil Gionfriddo, Tom Lyngcoln (Nation Blue/Harmony), Helen Cattanach, Downhills Home, Cherrywood, Greta Mob (Syd), Pink Tiles, Sons of Lee Marvin, Space Junk, the Cheats and more. Doors 7pm
Sunday 13th July is all about Charlie Owen, one of Australia’s most revered guitarists with a live showcase of the bands Owen has been a member of including The Divinyls, the Beasts of Bourbon, The New Christs, Louis Tillet & His Cast of Aspersions, the Working Class Ringos, Tex, Don & Charlie, the Tendrils and the Dark Horses. Performers include Paul Kelly, Adalita, Mick Harvey, Julitha Ryan, Dan Brodie, Penny Ikinger, Grindhouse, Link Meanie, the Love Bombs, Suzie Stapleton, Tex Naplam, members of the Large No. 12s and more.
