The Vanguard Welcomes the Supreme Ms Mary Wilson: Up Close, 14 & 15 June

A well-loved and iconic performer, Mary Wilson delivers thrilling performances of standards such as New York State of Mind, I Am Changing and Both Sides Now in her Up Close show.
The author of Dreamgirls: My Life As A Supreme and Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together, Mary is famously generous for sharing tales with her audiences from her storied life and will be performing the most intimate shows of her six city Australian tour at The Vanguard.
As a founding member of The Supremes, she helped set a record for the most consecutive Number One hits by an American group when Back in My Arms Again rose to the top of the Billboard singles chart, followed in rapid succession by Where Did Our Love Go, Baby Love, Come See About Me and Stop! In the Name of Love, among others.
Rising from the poverty of Detroit’s Brewster housing project to become Motown’s most consistent hit makers and the most popular female group of the Sixties, The Supremes had a distinctive style
and soulfulness that appealed to both black and white listeners at a time when racial divides were fierce and the civil rights movement was gathering momentum. The Supremes not only epitomised the Motown sound, their popularity in the Sixties was second only to the Beatles.
Later career adventures saw her stand alone as a solo recording artist, a favourite performing artist
in Las Vegas, an activist and even as a Cultural Ambassador appointed by Colin Powell for the U.S State Department.
