Montsalvat proudly announces a new Jazz Concert Series in the Montsalvat Barn Gallery in December. Celebrated Australian artists John McAll and Debra Byrne will join us to present a rich and intimate jazz program that will delight fans and those new to the genre alike at the program launch. Montsalvat is bringing ‘all that Jazz’ back for your thirsty ears!
John McAll, graduate of the inaugural VCA Jazz Program, pianist and musical director, was a member of the ‘80’s band I’m talking and also the legendary Black Sorrows. He has performed internationally and nationally and has an enviable list of recordings, including his 2009 instrumental Gold Album Black Money.
Grammy and Aria award winning queen Debra Byrne has extensive stage, television and concert experience across the musical spectrum. She has superb range as a vocalist and brings an absolute pro’s smoothness, heart and maturity to the songs she now chooses to sing.
Both artists are well known individually to Australian and international audiences. Together they bring their finely-honed artistry and a truly unforgettable jazz performance to our stage.
Series creator Ron Brown said, “After a decade of The Montsalvat Jazz Festival in the 80s and 90s there are still many jazz lovers with fond memories of those concerts who will welcome jazz back to this very special place. There is nothing like Montsalvat to experience a fine jazz gig and I am excited and honoured to see these two legendary performers kick start the new Montsalvat Jazz Series.”
Traditionally Jazz has been an important part of Montsalvat with the Montsalvat Melbourne International Jazz Festival running annually from 1988 until 1999. Musicians from all over the world came, most with their bands, to perform and hold masterclasses at Montsalvat. Then the festival was a large-scale, sponsored event and the small surpluses raised were ploughed back into Montsalvat for improvements to the grounds and buildings.
This new concert series is taking on the dual role of supporting our Jazz musicians in providing a rich Jazz concert experience for audiences whilst raising funds for much needed maintenance and restoration work at Montsalvat. All proceeds from the concert after artists are paid will go the Montsalvat Foundation.
The December concert promises to be a truly unique experience and fitting launch of the Jazz Series which will follow on the last Sunday of every month until June 2023.
