Fat Tuesday is upon us. Get ready for the biggest party of the year!
Mardi Gras (aka Fat Tuesday) is the biggest, most raucous party of the year thrown in Roman Catholic countries the night before Lent begins. Every Catholic and every other being in Louisiana knows that Ash Wednesday begins a 40 day fast of austerity to purify the soul, so Mardi Gras is one last chance to live it up and get down and dirty!
Throughout ‘Cajun Country’ in rural Southwest Louisiana and on the streets of New Orleans, Fat Tuesday is celebrated with festive food, music and dance with masked parades, colourful beads, costumed chicken runs, marching bands, dance bands, King cake and communal gumbos.
Perhaps better known here in Oz as Shrove Tuesday or ‘Pancake Tuesday’ we invite you to join us for this festive occasion at Melbourne’s best new party venue – Brunswick Ballroom!
Cajun music and its close cousin Zydeco are the traditional accordion driven dance and social music styles from the prairie and bayou country of Southwest Louisiana and East Texas, featuring fiddles, Cajun French vocals and highly infectious rhythmic dance feels. Look forward to a night of peppy 2-Steps, Waltzes, Breakdowns, Blues and Stomps from the Swamps.
Come celebrate a Cajun Mardi Gras ‘Fat Tuesday’ themed Party at Brunswick Ballroom for a night of Cajun and Zydeco music with Melbourne’s own ‘Johnny Can’t Dance Cajun Band’ and all the way from Newcastle NSW ‘Titian Payne’s Big Zydeco Express’ with special guest Saint Jazz on Holy Alto.
Featuring songs such as ‘La danse de Mardi Gras’ and the ‘Mardi Gras Jig’ and songs traditionally played for Cajun country Mardi Gras events. The melody for ‘La danse de Mardi Gras’ goes back to French medieval times and sounds like no other traditional or contemporary Cajun song.
