Delsinki Records ‘Burnt out By the Light’ @Toff In Town, 6 October

delsinki

Melbourne based singer songwriter Delsinki Records (aka Craig Johnston) is pleased to launch the second single from his debut EP on Sunday, October 6 at Toff In Town from 7pm.

He will be joined in a rare Melbourne appearance by Sydney troubadour Karl Broadie, who is launching his long awaited new album and by pirate shred specialist Citrus Jam.

Burnt Out by the Light was written in memory of Johnston’s former band mate and harmonica player Sonny Lewis who passed late last year and you can view the companion animated video clip here: http://youtu.be/fs4fPT1aC5A.

Delsinki Records is the first solo ep Johnston has released and earlier this year he took it on the road, playing Hobart, Sydney and Melbourne, also appearing at the Adventure Bay Blues & Roots Festival and the inaugural Leaps & Bounds Music Festival.

The four song ep also contains three other tracks – In Over My Head, Sanchez and What You Dream Is Not Your Fault, Each track has a corresponding film clip, which will be shown at the Toff as part of the multimedia presentation to launch Burnt Out By The Light.
Prior to Delsinki Records, Johnston was the founding member of a band called Gretchen Lewis (2002), still a going concern whose high-octane sound continues to captivate Melbourne audiences.

Last year he performed at the Sydney Opera House, The Perth Concert Hall and the Wool Shed (Gnaraloo) as part of the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s The Reef – a creative collaboration between Richard Tognetti, Mick Sowry & Jon Frank. This trip was the inspiration for some of the material on this EP.

Craig also sang along side Brian Ritchie from (The Violent Femmes) as a part of the 2013 The Reef Australian/Hong Kong Tour, which started in Brisbane and finished up in Sydney at the Opera House before finishing with a flourish in Hong Kong.

Tix $10 on the door at Toff In Town, Second Floor, Curtin House, 252 Swanston St, Melbourne on Sunday, October 6 from 7pm.

ALEX & THE SHY LASHLIES ANNOUNCE DOUBLE A SIDE 7″ VINYL ON PURE POP RECORDS & NATIONAL TOUR!

Once Upon a Time:

Around six years ago – a tall, shy teenager with a Lyle Lovett circa 1985 haircut ambled into Pure Pop Records store. He shuffled about looking at this and that before introducing himself properly as an aspiring musician to proprietor Dave Stevens. Naturally Dave promptly offered him a gig playing in the intimate confines of the Pure Pop Courtyard that very Friday night.

When the very young, very shy Alex Lashlie opened his mouth that first night, he revealed a stunning Buckley-esque voice and a lyrical sensibility that belied his tender years and enthralled the crowd. He was invited to play again and again. And again.

And so it began.

Alex played every Friday for the next 18 months and became one of Pure Pop’s favourite artists. Audiences watched in wonder while his raw talent developed over the months. He made lots of musical friends through Dave and through his performances at Pure Pop and was invited to play more gigs, even scoring a coveted guest spot on one of Melbourne’s best musical events, Charles Jenkins’ Winter Ball 2012.

Then Alex went to Europe and played gigs there and wrote a bunch of songs, as you do when you’re 20 and you’re in Europe. When he returned to Oz he formed the band Alex & The Shy Lashlies with Etta Curry and Jeff May and took this tightly knit troupe into the studio to record two new songs for the newly reborn Pure Pop Records label.

Ancient history lesson:

Pure Pop Records began life as a record label run from a spare bedroom and released a number of CD’s up until 2005 when Dave bought the Pure Pop Records store.

“The label was put on hiatus, but we’re back. It’s absolutely fitting and proper that the first release on the reborn label is Pure Pop homeboy Alex Lashlie with Alex & The Shy Lashlies’ stunning double-A side 7″ vinyl single. I know this is the beginning of great things for Alex and for my label, too,” he said.

Download ‘309’ – new single from Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes (with Bill Chambers)

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Lachlan Bryan and his band The Wildes are pleased to present ‘309’, the debut single from long awaited new album ‘Black Coffee’.

You can fairly smell the dust from the road on this rollicking tale of love, treachery and derring-do which concludes with the warning “by the time they hear the sirens there will be no trace of me.” The song was co-written with Bill Chambers, who also sings on the recording.

“Bill and I liked this song a lot”, says Lachlan, “and when it came time to record – it only seemed right to share the vocals. It appeals to the wicked side in both of us”.

“This is the opening track to an album I’m extremely proud of” he continues “and really excited for you to hear”.

‘309’ finds Lachlan and The Wildes together again and in top form following last year’s acclaimed solo album ‘Shadow of the Gun.’

“The frustration at not (yet) getting a second Oscar+Martin record has been replaced by excitement over Brothers Hand Mirror (left). The subversive, hip-hop hoochie homeboys (so much ‘h’alliteration today, huh?) are Oscar Vincente Slorach-Thorn and Grant Gronewold.

PUREPOP’S CLASSIC ALBUMS SHOW # TWO WITH SHANNON BOURNE, SARAH CARROLL AND SIMMEAU – 18 SEPTEMBER

After the huge success of last months show at The Toff In Town, we’re ready for the next one featuring three fantastic acts performing three great albums.

Shannon Bourne is undoubtedly one of Australia’s best guitarists and his take on The Jimi Hendrix Experience album Are You Experienced was magnificent in stripped back form in the Pure Pop courtyard. Can’t wait to hear it at full volume!

All the more appropriate as Sept 18 is the 43rd anniversary of the passing of Jimi Hendrix.

Sarah Carroll delighted the Pure Pop audience with her interpretation of Jonathan Richman’s brilliant album Jonathan Goes Country. Joining her on stage will be special guest Marcel Borrack.

Wanting to open the show with a bang I couldn’t go past Simmeau who’s Robert Plant has to be heard to be believed. A complete performance of Led Zeppelin IV should shake the cobwebs off the evening.

Hosted by Crispian Winsor and Maddy Macfarlane from PBSFM’s The Breakfast Spread PBS 106.7

$15 presale $20 at the door.

TV SNOW LAUNCHING ‘NEON NIGHTS’ IN PERTH, 14 SEPTEMBER

Perth indie-rockers TV Snow are thrilled to present their latest power
pop single ‘Neon Nights’ Saturday, September 14, 8pm at Amp in Perth.

They’ll be filming on the night – making one of those slo-mo vibey vids so get in to hear more of their new tunes- with Tired Lion (facebook.com/TiredLionBand), Apache (facebook.com/Apacheperth) and Fly Breeder. $10 on the door!

‘Neon Nights’ shows off TV Snow’s trademark sparkling pop melodies with anthemic 80’s guitar rock sensibility. Enigmatic lyrically and a departure from their earlier sound, it hints at new depths even as it coaxes frenzied fists into the air!

TV Snow came together 4 years ago, bonding over a love of rapid indie-rock rhythms and washed-out coastal melodies. First recording in November 2010 under the guidance of Shaun Sibbes and Lee Jones (ex-Eskimo Joe), their debut ep soon saw them playing supports for blossoming local groups (Rainy Day Women, The Ghost Hotel, The Warning Birds) interstate bands (Bleeding Knees Club) and internationally touring acts (Lydia, USA).

Fast forward to a 2012 tour of Melbourne followed by more studio sessions that would see that band working towards an album release with the help of new bass player Ben Linden. The band finished recording their debut long player on July 13 th – but the next day, tragedy struck. Ben, an avid surfer, was riding waves near Wedge Island when he was fatally attacked by a shark.

Many bands might have thrown in the towel at this point, TV Snow were unshakably affected by the way their friend’s presence lived on in the music they had just finished recording. They called the CD Red – the name by which Ben was known to his friends and toured it in the US and Australia.

TV Snow Is:
Sean Tyler – Vocals and Synth
Anthony Di Giovanni – Lead Guitar
John Mariani – Rhythm Guitar
Derek Wardrobe – Bass
Garo Tanzi – Drums

TV Snow ditches the typical tropical, tribal warmth, and adds a bit more of a straight forward rock sound to go along with their poppy, coastal grooves….a big sound that demands your attention.” – The Record Stache

TV Snow’s ‘Neon Nights’ will be on iTunes from 1 September.

THE AGE MUSIC VICTORIA AWARDS 2013 TO INDUCT RENÉE GEYER TO HALL OF FAME AND PRESENT SOUL REVUE AWARDS NIGHT

The Age and Music Victoria join forces this year in a new partnership to celebrate the state’s musical riches in an all-Victorian awards evening, and to induct singer, songwriter, producer, author and soul queen Renée Geyer into The Age Music Victoria Hall of Fame.

Previously known as The Age EG Awards, the new The Age Music Victoria Awards, with supporting partner SAE Institute and presented by 3RRR 102.7FM, will be held on Wednesday 20th November 2013 at Billboard during Melbourne Music Week. As well as Renée Geyer’s 45 minute greatest hits set with special guests, this year’s awards night is set to be a star-studded Soul Revue with the EG Allstars joined by the biggest names in Victorian soul!

Ms Geyer will prove once and for all that it’s no longer a man’s man’s world as she takes her place as the first solo female artist to be inducted, alongside previous Hall of Famers Weddings Parties Anything, Hoodoo Gurus, Died Pretty, Painters and Dockers, Kim Salmon, and TISM. Renée will be inducted by the Arts Minister, the Hon. Heidi Victoria.

Renée Geyer says: “As a Melbourne girl, getting inducted into the Hall of Fame by Music Victoria and the best newspaper in Australia means a lot to me. And as a patron of Support Act Limited, it’s great that the awards will continue to donate some profits to the musician’s charity. I can’t wait to play with my band, featuring some of the best musicians in Australia and a couple of special guests,” she said.

Michael Gudinski will also be inducted by Molly Meldrum into The Age Music Victoria Awards Hall of Fame (non-musician) to recognise Mushroom’s 40th anniversary and to acknowledge his enormous contribution to the Victorian music industry.

The Age Music Victoria Awards will present publicly voted awards in 11 categories (including new awards for Best Regional Act and Best Regional Venue) across all genres which are voted via The Age online. This year, the awards are boosted by 11 new specialist genre categories, ranging from avant-garde/experimental to blues, country, electronic, hip hop and heavy. Expert judging panels will choose the nominees and winners, and awards will be handed out prior to the main awards night. The best of the genre music winners will also be considered for the main public award nominations.

The Age Music Victoria Awards night on 20th November is open to the public and tickets are on sale now for $50+bf.

The Age shortlist editor, Martin Boulton, said the new partnership between The Age and Music Victoria will ensure the awards maintain the charm of The Age EG Awards, which ran for seven years at the Prince Bandroom in St Kilda, and then last year at Billboard. It averages 80,000 public votes, making it the most popular public-voted music awards in the country, and has so far raised more than $70,000 for Australian music industry charity Support Act Limited. $5 from every ticket sold will go to Support Act.

“This exciting new partnership between The Age and Music Victoria builds on the great foundation of the EG Awards and will shine a big, bright spotlight on Victoria’s best musical talents now and well into the future,” said Martin Boulton. “The difference in the voting is that it will just focus on Victorian music instead of national music, and the Age voters tended to vote for the local bands anyway.”

“Having started The Age EG Awards when I worked at The Age seven years ago, it’s a pleasure to be involved in them again,” added Music Victoria CEO, Patrick Donovan.

“One of our core goals is to ’Celebrate and Promote Victorian Music’ and there’s no better way to do that than in a credible, fun awards ceremony. We started the event as a party to celebrate The EG’s 21st anniversary, and the night will maintain the party vibe with a focus on great live performances, the presentation of the public voted awards and a few speeches. It’s great that after Renée played the first awards, she returns to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and take her rightful place as the Queen of Soul.”
