BAKEHOUSE OPEN DAY & STREET PARTY – A CHANCE TO LOOK INSIDE A MELBOURNE MUSIC LANDMARK – #lbmf

Don’t miss your chance to look inside a ‘Melbourne Music Landmark’, Bakehouse Studios!

11am Saturday July 12th

If you’ve always wanted to look inside the studios where your favourite musicians hone their craft, here’s your chance. A secret place where The walls of drip with the history of Australian music, where the likes of  Nick Cave, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins, the Drones and thousands of bands have called home. Bakehouse is the headquarters of SLAM (Save Live Australia’s Music) and where the SLAM rally, “Australia’s largest Cultural Protest” was born.
Bakehouse will open their doors to the public for the first time ever and to celebrate the Leaps and Bounds Music Festival are throwing a street party in Little Hoddle Street!
Featuring Bakehouse favourites Harmony, ‘the mongrel concoction of gallows blues balladry, and soaring Gospel vocals and splatter jazz quartet The Impossible No Goods featuring BJ Morriszonkle take to the stage from 11am.
To coincide with their first ever public open day, Bakehouse will reveal a very special collaboration with some of Australia’s leading Contemporary Visual artists and artisans. Contributors presenting new works include Patricia Piccinini, Emily Floyd, Veronica Kent and Dirty Three guitarist and painter Mick Turner. In a world first, visual artists have been let loose in some of the smallest and grungiest rehearsal rooms to create installations especially for musicians in this working studio.
You’ll see installations made of Icing from the darlings of NGV’s Melbourne Now, the Hotham Street Ladies, Taxidermy from vegan artist Julia deVille, a metal room by jeweller Cass Partington, Early Punk images from photographer Peter Milne, a bespoke ”backstage’ by design duo Brustman + Boyd and a homage to pulp fiction by screen printer Stewart Russell. Tours will run through the afternoon.

Leaps and Bounds Music Festival is proudly presented by City of Yarra, Music Victoria, Beat Magazine & PBS 106.7 FM with the support of the Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation.

PAUL KELLY, BOB MURPHY & FRANCIS LEACH – PRESENTATION NIGHT – PART OF THE LEAPS & BOUNDS MUSIC FESTIVAL

Winterman & Goldstein, Beat, Tonedeaf and Triple R presentpresentationnight_poster

PRESENTATION NIGHT

Whereby PAUL KELLY and BOB MURPHY discuss music, football (and life) at

THE CORNER HOTEL, WEDNESDAY 10TH JULY

Part of the Leaps & Bounds Music Festival

Hosted by FRANCIS LEACH

‘Presentation Night’ is a live talk show that takes football and music as starting points for a discussion about our great obsessions – love, life, how to win the flag and great albums. It’s about learning something new about our heroes, ourselves, and how kicking a ball and writing songs define us.  It all happens live on stage at The Corner Hotel, Richmond.

Under the warm glow of the spotlight, PAUL KELLY (legendary singer/songwriter, author, Norwood FC supporter) and BOB MURPHY (legendary Western Bulldog, newspaper columnist, music fan) come together to discuss their mutual love of music and footy at length in ways that are philosophical, funny and surprising.

Ably guided by music and sport obsessive FRANCIS LEACH (ABC Grandstand Breakfast), Presentation Night will tackle the big issues: what similarities are there between the professional musician and the professional footballer? How do friendships form in footy and in music? Is there any similarity in the discipline of training and in forcing oneself to sit down and write a song? Is there any room for the true maverick in either field any more? Let’s find out about Bob’s favourite albums and Paul’s favourite footballers – and much, much more.

‘Presentation Night’ was born of desire to talk about two much-loved obsessions together in a public forum. In a football and music-loving town where the two pursuits are so often followed with equal passion, it makes perfect sense. To have two greats in their field talk about their love of both capers together gives us a chance to learn something new about them beyond the usual reportage of their endeavors.

Their conversation will last longer than a tweet – and that’s the point. A bit of meandering and a touch of digression will be encouraged.  It’s the equivalent of the slow food movement for Sherrin kickers and string strokers.  It’s a chance to learn something new about the role that footy and music play in our protagonists’ lives, and with a bit of luck, maybe even a bit about how kicking a ball and writing songs can come to define us.

The inaugural Leaps and Bounds Music Festival kicks off on Friday 5 – Sunday 21 July.
