1. Great or total devastation; doom
2. A prophetic disclosure; a revelation.

“Apocalypse was written on a ukulele while I was staying at a beautiful beach on the Mornington Peninsula- hardly the setting for a song about the fiery end of human civilization. But it’s a place I’ve been going since I was a kid and there’s something about it that always makes me see things in a new light. That’s really what the song is about; becoming aware of great change, while everyone else seems to be able to ignore it.”
The single was produced by Craig Pilkington (ARIA award winner for his work with Gurrumul) and recorded at Audrey Studios in Melbourne, a process aided by a kilo of hummus and infinite cups of peppermint tea.

Apocalypse puts storytelling at its centre as it follows the protaganist’s reaction to a huge, destructive event that no one else seems to notice. Through both the form and the lyrics, change and destruction are hinted at while the rest of the world “sleeps right through it.”

Apocalypse features meticulously crafted lyrics complemented by Anna’s soaring vocals and the Appetites’ signature saxophone, guitar, drums and bass textures which punctuate her often dark and always captivating songs.

“Anna Smyrk’s songs have such a charm about them. There’s a graceful understanding of all that has gone before, coupled with a determination to express what she thinks and feels, in her own beautiful way. A glorious combination of talents.” – Charles Jenkins.

Anna Smyrk and The Appetites are:
Anna Smyrk: (vocals, piano, acoustic guitar)
Sally Rochlin: saxophone
Martin Rotolo: electric guitar
Jimmy Nicholas: bass guitar
Kein Jenkin: drums

Anna Smyrk and the Appetites won the Queenscliff Music Festival Foot-in-the-Door competition in 2009 and later performed at Port Fairy Folk Festival. Anna also participated in PUSH songs program, where she received one-on-one songwriting mentorship from Jeff Lang and Abbie Dobson (Leonardo’s Bride).

In 2012 the band released their debut EP “Belly of Winter”, which was recorded with ARIA award winning producer Craig Pilkington. The months following the release were spent touring almost constantly. Hauling a second-hand Jim’s Cleaning trailer full of gear around the country, Anna and the Appetites began to make connections with audiences from Ararat to Maroochydore, Adelaide to Katoomba. With the help of a grant from the Office of the Arts Contemporary Music Touring Program Anna was able to travel further afield than ever, launching her acclaimed single, “There’s a War” last November.

In 2013 Anna received funding from Arts Victoria to record her debut album. The theme of this album is the End of The World As We Know It. Scheduled for release in 2014, it shaping up to be a whirlwind of destruction, revelation and seeing the world anew.

About Anna: Anna is based in Melbourne and enjoys op-shopping, cups of tea and swimming in large bodies of water. She first entered the world of music at age 8 when she squealed on the violin for the very first time.

She is currently juggling many balls alongside her music, including working on her Anthropology thesis and volunteering with a local asylum seeker organisation.

WHTSQR LAUNCHES ‘THE THINGS SHE NEVER OWNED’ AT BAR 303, 30 JUNE

Whtsqr launches ‘The Things She Never Owned’ at Bar 303, 30 June.gig poster

Ladies and gentlemen,

It’s not every day someone just comes out of the shadows and hands you a collection of jewels. Rejoice, for this is such a day.

Listen once and be reminded a bit of break through ‘break-up’ albums like Sea Change or Blood on the Tracks.  Listen twice and the songs are under your skin for good.

‘The Things She Never Owned’ is the work of Whtsqr (“White Square”), the disemvowelled alter-ego of bedroom musician Guy Morton.

“Recording each of the songs on this album has been satisfying in itself, but I’m incredibly excited to be bringing this album to life by playing it with a fantastic band. There’s a magic to playing live that’s hard to beat.”

There are 12 original songs on the album – from the almost Astral Weeks-like Polythene Sky through the startling imagery of Melted Woman to the Countrydylanesque Midnight Souvlaki and the sparkling pop nugget No Mystery.

“These are beautiful songs, superbly delivered each and every time.” – Charles Jenkins

“The songs were so realised, melodic and confident that I started to wonder if this was actually a covers night of covers no-one knew” – David Nichols, Presenter 3RRR

“Great production quality, great song writing, great strings, just great. Love the lazy groove that is ‘Calm and Defenceless’. ‘No Mystery’ just doesn’t go long enough for mine. A masterpiece.” – Stephen Anderson, Presenter 3RRR

Whtsqr is

Guy Morton, vocals, rhythm guitar

Bob Spencer, guitar

Kevin Hunt, bass

Graham Maddicks, drums

Dave Milne, keyboards

Support act Dave Milne solo at 3:30pm, Whtsqr 4:30pm.

Krista Polvere’s – Reservoir Drive scores 3.5 stars in the Sydney Morning Herald

Krista Polvere

Reservoir Drive (Sony/ATV)

3½ stars

She isn’t shy about using her persuasive female charms as a creative force. Track one has the subject losing her country maidenhead early. Which is one thing. Then there is the provocative sleeve shot setting the scene for some hormone-related man/woman swooning.krista polvere pic josh robenstone

With Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford on axe and production (with Anthony Arvizu) dishing up some tidy guitar work, musically Polvere strikes at the heart of good alt country rock/folk. Based in Melbourne, she has a wonderfully understated, apple-martini voice and plies it on winsome tracks that seem sung from a place where you travel long distances to get anywhere. On Jack and Me, grungy, graceful tones flood in from the bass and slide guitar. For The Widow’s Daughter and The Golden Meadow, teasing melodies put you in any folk festival tent around the world, suffering a little at the beauty.

Next, Looking for Love, with the help of Ryan Adams, is stand-up, sex-driven, female alt-country-rock. Moving through, the brilliance is less pronounced, with her trump cards, save The Ruse and Beat Motel, up front

We reached 23,852 punters before even picking up the phone

We checked our Facebook “people reached” figures and there it was. 23,852 for the week. (“People reached” means individual people who saw a post.)

Of course we also reach many thousands more through conventional media as always. However, we had just consolidated all our social media channels—Blog, Facebook and Twitter. Surprised by the figures? Nah.

PRESS RELEASE
Krista Polvere launches Pledge Music campaign for Reservoir Drive
Alt/Country singer/songwriter Krista Polvere takes to the pages of Pledge Music to raise funds for the release of her second full length album in both Australia and the U.S.A.
Krista penned 12 new songs for Reservoir Drive including ‘Jack and Me’, the follow up single to ‘Looking For Love’ (featuring Ryan Adams).
A tale of love and treachery, ‘Jack and Me’ mines rich alt-country territory, combining both the femme fatale archetype pioneered by Bobbie Gentry and the gritty female troubadour of Lucinda Williams.

The Krista Polvere Reservoir Drive Pledge Music page can be found here – http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/kristapolvere

About Krista Polvere:
Playing shows around the small bars and clubs in Adelaide, Polvere followed her muse to Melbourne for its famed live music culture and also ventured to New York City for an adventure, travelling to the heart of where the folk scene began. Known to be a huge Dylan fan, she was mesmerized by the history of the music scene there.  An introduction to Jon Graboff of The Cardinals led to a meeting with Ryan Adams, with whom she co-wrote tracks for her debut album Here Be Dragons.
Krista clocked up expert live performance experience accompanying Ryan Adams and The Cardinals on a national Australian tour to sell out shows, also opening for Canadian folk man Ron Sexsmith and touring with Steve Earle.
Marc Ford (The Black Crowes) and his long-time friend /music collaborator Anthony Arvizu recorded and mixed Krista’s second album live in their Long Beach Californian studio, The Compound in just three weeks.

The result is the sparkling alt/country ride Reservoir Drive, a showcase for Krista’s song writing ability and voice – out on iTunes and through Bandcamp on April 30.

“She’s going to be the next big thing. I did some guitar and some vocals and I would say this: I have always been impressed by her. She’s always impressed me as a songwriter and a friend. But the songs I’ve heard this time, I can honestly say I had no idea that she was capable of what I heard… I was shocked at how intricate it was…. a powerful record. It’s going to be a real game-changer.” – Ryan Adams
