THE ANNUAL AGE MUSIC VICTORIA GENRE AWARDS FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

The second annual Age Music Victoria Genre Awards finalists were announced earlier this morning by Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan on The Breakfast Spread radio show with presenting partner PBS.

Specially selected expert panels deliberated over the best music from 1 October 2013 to 1 October 2014 across genres, from jazz to hip hop, global and heavy, and agreed on the top five releases and acts, which can now be revealed.

This year’s nominees cover all genres from jazz to electronic to best experimental avant-garde and nominees include hip hop artists Briggs, Geko, L-Fresh the Lion, Remi and Tornts along with Victoria’s best country acts Eaten By Dogs, Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes, T-Bones, Tracy McNeil and Wagons.

“Last year’s Age Music Victoria Genre Awards highlighted the wonderful breadth of musical talent in Melbourne and throughout our regional areas. It’s fantastic these names are being held up as the best in their field,” said Martin Boulton, Editor of the Shortlist at The Age.

Victoria’s diverse contemporary music scene will be celebrated with the presentation and announcement of 11 genre based awards on Thursday 16th October at an invitation only event.  This is also the 9th year for The Age Music Victoria Awards publicly voted awards and those nominees will be announced at the Genre Awards. Voting will open to the public online at theage.com.au on Friday 17th October and there will also be a rare opportunity to win a few double passes via The Age to the now sold-out public awards night on Wednesday 19th November at 170 Russell Street, Melbourne CBD.

In recognition of the artists’ contribution to Victorian music, all nominees in the Genre Awards will receive a free rehearsal/pre-production package at Bakehouse Studios. Winners in each category will also receive a 10 hour recording package along with this very special prize.

“Victoria is a melting pot of musical styles. The Age Music Victoria Genre Awards were established in 2014 with expert peer voting panels to recognise the most outstanding practitioners in each genre. Congratulations to all the nominees – we look forward to seeing the winners crowned on the 16th of October,” said Music Victoria CEO, Patrick Donovan.

Adrian Basso, PBS General Manager said “PBS106.7FM is once again delighted to be involved in The Age Music Victoria Awards, celebrating Victoria’s rich music culture. Since 1979, PBS has been an intrinsic part of the local music community, broadcasting and supporting all styles of music not heard elsewhere. Full credit to Music Victoria and The Age for committing itself to this initiative, which we are proud to be part of.”

The Age Music Victoria Awards 2014 Presents: The Return of Daddy Cool!

The Age and Music Victoria are proud to announce that Australia’s best-loved band, Daddy Cool, will reform to play a special one hour show to celebrate their induction into The Age Music Victoria Hall of Fame on Wednesday 19th November.

Daddy Cool front man Ross Wilson said, “As you know, although we’re all four still working musicians, Daddy Cool reforms only for very special occasions. We do get offers to play now and then, but we don’t tour and we don’t need to. This is not only a prestigious award – it’s a fun thing, getting together with other musicians, people saying nice things about us and having a few free drinks at the end of the night. That sounds like fun and that appeals to us.  Daddy Cool has always been about having fun.”

Originally formed in Melbourne in 1970 with Wayne Duncan, Gary Young, Ross Wilson and Ross Hannaford, Daddy Cool’s debut single “Eagle Rock” was released in May 1971 and shot straight to number one on the Australian singles chart. It recently topped a Max TV poll of the greatest Australian songs of all time. Their 1971 LP “Daddy Who? Daddy Cool!” also reached number one, becoming the first Australian rock album to sell more than 100,000 copies.

The awards night will kick off at 8.30pm with MC Henry Wagons, and special guests including Russell Morris, Stonefield, and Jess Cornelius (Teeth & Tongue) performing with musical director Pete Luscombe (RocKwiz) with the EG Allstars. Davey Lane will also perform a Jim Keays tribute and the evening will conclude with Daddy Cool’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony and concert.

Tickets are $50+bf to the public on sale Monday 4th August via 170Russell.com. Music Victoria members and The Age subscribers can access a special discounted ticket offer of $40+bf.

A limited number of corporate booths are available – please contact Music Victoria to purchase.

This year the Awards are proud to announce that ALH Group’s Live At Your Local has joined SAE Institute and Triple R 102.7FM as a presenting partner.

ALH Group State Manager, Paul Cooper, said “Our hotels provide a vibrant live entertainment option in the suburbs to cater for all tastes and liveatyourlocal.com.au is proud to be a presenting partner.”

The Age Music Victoria Awards 2014 will be held during Melbourne Music Week on Wednesday 19th November at 170 Russell (formerly Billboard) from 8.30pm – 11.00pm.

The publicly voted The Age Music Victoria Awards presentations will precede the concert this year. Pioneer rock music journalist Ed Nimmervoll will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Awards, which are the largest publicly voted awards in Australia with an average of 80,000 votes.

Public polls open online via The Age on Friday 17th October after the completion of The Age Music Victoria Genre Awards. The Performing Arts Centre, and The Age online, will also pay tribute to this year’s inductees in exhibitions leading up to the event.

The Awards continue their long association with the musicians’ charity Support Act Limited, donating $5 from each ticket to the organisation.

Tickets are on sale Monday 4th August for $50+bf at 170russell.ticketscout.com.au/gigs/2805/

THE AGE MUSIC VICTORIA AWARDS 2013 WINNERS

 The_Age_Music_Victoria_Awards_Logo_CMYK_300dpi

Renée Geyer and an all-star cast of Victoria’s finest musicians told the story of Australian soul to a near capacity crowd last night at the inaugural The Age Music Victoria Awards at Billboard, with Renée playing a 45 minute set of her greatest hits and delivering a passionate rendition of ‘It’s a Man’s Man’s World.’

A thrilled Geyer said, “This award means so much – it is a career-topping milestone and I’m thrilled to be the first female solo inductee to The Age Music Victoria Hall Of Fame.”

Nominees for Best Album, Big Scary, opened the night with a 30 minute set, warming the crowd up with their stunning psychedelic pop sound. Other highlights of the night included 2013’s Best Soul, Funk, R’n’B and Gospel Album Genre Award winner Kylie Auldist and Lance Ferguson together on ‘Stares and Whispers’; Linda Bull covering Paul Kelly’s ‘Sure Got Me’, and a stunning duet from Saskwatch vocalist Nkechi and Henry Wagons. The EG Allstars rocked steadily along with special guest vocalists Dan Sultan, Daniel Merriweather, Remi Kolawole, Talei Wolfgramm and Ella Thompson, and Archie Roach’s ‘Heal The People’ brought the house down.

This year The Drones won big twice, capturing City of Melbourne award for Best Band as well as the RocKwiz award for  Best Live Band; and Paul Kelly also bagged two trophies with The Age EG Best Album for his ‘Spring and Fall’ album, and Select AV’s Best Male Artist Award.

Adalita topped off a huge year with a well-deserved win for The Music’s Best Female Artist Award and newcomer Hiatus Kaiyote won the BigSound &Travel Beyond Best Emerging Artist Award, which includes flights and accommodation to Brisbane’s BigSound Conference and a slot in a high-profile showcase in addition to a very cool looking trophy.

The Mountain Goat award for Best Venue went to Melbourne’s fine Corner Hotel, and Crumpler’s Best Festival award went to Meredith Music Festival, with Aunty Meredith sending a telegram of thanks to the award’s presenters.

This year, the two new regional award categories that were introduced for public voting – Best Regional Venue and Best Regional Act – attracted fierce competition and interest with the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine winning the award for Best Regional Venue and everyone’s favourite sister act Stonefield winning Best Regional Act.

Editor of The Age ‘Shortlist’, Martin Boulton, said “The state of Victorian music is in rude health when a genuine star of the industry in Paul Kelly is still delivering career best albums and this year’s Best Emerging Artist award has gone to Hiatus Kaiyoye, who couldn’t attend only because they’re blowing away audiences overseas.”

“On a night when Renée Geyer was recognised for her enormous contribution to the music industry, we’ve also seen some of Victoria’s best talent on show.”

Music Victoria CEO, Patrick Donovan said, “Congratulations to all of the winners and inductees. The ecstatic response from the crowd and 80,000 plus votes from the public illustrates that Victoria’s world class soul scene deserved its own night and that a Victorian contemporary music awards was long over due. Bring on next year.”

THE AGE MUSIC VICTORIA AWARDS 2013 were presented by SAE and 3RRR 102.7FM.

Many of the races are tight, including the Best Male category, where Paul Kelly is having a ding-dong battle with David Bridie, Archie Roach, Mikelangelo and Gotye.

The Best Regional Venue category is also hotly contested, with all five nominees attracting plenty of voting action.

Music Victoria CEO, Patrick Donovan, said “It’s great to see regional music fans get right behind their favourite local venue in this category, so we are pleased to have this new category in the main voting this year. Music is enjoyed all around the state, so it’s very important to have regional live music venues represented.”

Nominees for the Best Song award are nose to nose towards the finish line with Vance Joy’s Riptide among the big vote-getters and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard also breaking through with their track Head On/Pill. Cash Savage’s I’m In Love, Courtney Barnett’s History Eraser and Standish/Carlyon’s Nono/Yoyo are also attracting plenty of attention.

The Age shortlist editor, Martin Boulton, said “The wealth of standout nominees in the first Age Music Victoria Awards reflects the fantastic talent we have in Melbourne and right across the state. Next week’s awards night will blow the lid off Billboard and I can’t think of a better way to launch the new format than having home grown talent like Renee Geyer, Dan Sultan, Henry Wagons, Big Scary and Kylie Auldist live on stage.”

The Age and Music Victoria joined forces this year in a new partnership to celebrate the state’s musical riches in an all-Victorian awards evening, and to induct singer, songwriter, producer, author and soul queen Renée Geyer into The Age Music Victoria Hall of Fame.

Previously known as The Age EG Awards, the new The Age Music Victoria Awards, with supporting partner SAE Institute and presented by 3RRR 102.7FM, will be held on Wednesday 20th November 2013 at Billboard during Melbourne Music Week. As well as Renée Geyer’s 45 minute greatest hits set with special guests, this year’s awards night is set to be a star-studded Soul Revue with the EG Allstars joined by the biggest names in Victorian soul!

Michael Gudinski will also be inducted by Molly Meldrum into The Age Music Victoria Awards Hall of Fame (non-musician) to recognise Mushroom’s 40th anniversary and to acknowledge his enormous contribution to the Victorian music industry.

The Age Music Victoria Awards will present publicly voted awards in 11 categories (including new awards for Best Regional Act and Best Regional Venue) across all genres which are voted via The Age online.

The Age Music Victoria Awards night on Wednesday 20th November is open to the public and tickets are on sale now for $50+bf.

HOODOO GURUS TO HEADLINE THE AGE EG AWARDS 2011

Like Wow!

The Age EG is thrilled to announce legendary Australian band the Hoodoo Gurus as this year’s inductees into The Age EG Hall of Fame and the headline act for the 2011 Age EG Awards at the Prince Bandroom in St Kilda on Wednesday, November 23.

The Hoodoo Gurus were formed in Sydney in 1981 by Dave Faulkner, Brad Shepherd , James Baker and Clyde Bramley. The Gurus gave Australia such anthemic pop-rock gems as Leilani, Tojo, My Girl, I Want You Back, Bittersweet, Like Wow-Wipeout!, Miss Free Love ‘69 and What’s My Scene?. They will join their rock n’ roll colleagues Paul Kelly, Painters and Dockers, Died Pretty, Kim Salmon and TISM as the sixth act chosen by EG staff for the EG Hall of Fame in loving memory of former Age journalist and one-time EG editor Steve Waldon.

“We are very proud to include the Gurus, who gave us such brilliant albums as Mars Needs Guitars!, Blow your Cool! and Magnum Cum Louder, to our very exclusive Hall of Fame” says EG editor Jo Roberts. “Each year this night gets better and better and the Awards night gig has earned legendary status among discerning Melbourne music fans. After last year’s awards, Beat magazine said ‘you’d be hard-pressed to find anything else with this much spontaneity, or heart, in the musical calendar and that really sums it up. The EG Awards are a labour of love.”

Dave Faulkner was on hand at the 2008 EG Awards to induct friends and peers Died Pretty into the EG Hall of Fame. “It was like one big party, he said, “It’s a good one. It has the thing of not being industry- like, even though it is part of the industry…the EG Awards are different.”

Triple R’s own Jon Von Goes will host the awards this year, which will be opened by the four-sister phenomenon that is Victoria’s own Stonefield who this year have already wowed audiences from Glastonbury to LA’s Roxy. The sizzling house band the EG All-Stars (including Pete Luscombe, Dan Luscombe, Ash Naylor and Bill McDonald) will be performing along with other guest stars on the night, TBA.

Eight of the 10 EG Awards are chosen by EG readers, making it the largest reader-voted music awards in Australia, with last year’s online voting drawing a record 45,000 votes.

This year Patrick Donovan, Music Victoria CEO and Founder of the Age EG Awards will present two awards on the night – details TBA.

The Age EG Music Awards 2007

It was one of the most memorable gigs of last year, when everyone from Paul Kelly to Dallas Crane, Barnesy and Bonnie Tyler helped The Age EG celebrate its 21st Birthday at the Prince Bandroom. And now The Age EG Music Awards are back with a vengeance. The concert, to be held at St Kilda’s Prince Bandroom on November 30, will star one of the hottest rock bands in the country, the Living End, in their only gig of the year. The EG Allstars house band will get together again to play a bunch of songs (originals and covers), with guest singers including Angie Hart, Clare Bowditch, Joe Camilleri and X’s Steve Lucas, while Jet’s Nic Cester performs his band’s songs acoustically.

The EG Music Awards, which will be decided by readers, will be presented on the night. The awards honour the best music of 2007 and will introduce a new inductee into the Hall of Fame alongside inaugural inductees TISM. Last year’s awards generated 37,000 votes. Readers can have their say this year by visiting http://egawards.theage.com.au/

The Big Day Out’s Vivian Lees said the inaugural awards filled a gap in the contemporary entertainment scene. “It was great because the audience members voted and importantly because the musicians embraced it and made it a big success with a lot of nice musical performances which you hardly see accept at genuine events.”

Tickets are only $30 (plus b/f) on sale today from record stores, the Prince public bar, www.princebandroom or 9536 1168

See you at the Prince on 30th November for a great night of music and merriment!

Cheers,

xKaren
