A.J. STEEL PREMIERES DEBUT SINGLE ‘DROWNING ON DRY LAND’ IN SOLO ACOUSTIC SHOW – 20 NOVEMBER @ MR BOOGIE MAN!

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see a studio musician at the top of his game live. Melbourne singer-songwriter A.J. Steel premieres debut single Drowning On Dry Land in his one-night-only solo acoustic show at Mr Boogie Man
Drowning on Dry Land is a moving and evocative track mixed by ARIA and Golden Guitar Nominated Producer/Mixer/Engineer Jimi Maroudas. Maroudas has worked with Pete Murray, Kimbra and also Eskimo Joe on their ARIA No #1 album Inshalla.
Drowning on Dry Land tells the story of a common struggle – the unseen fight beneath the calm surface to stay afloat.
Afer a stint in the military, Steel headed to Melbourne with nothing but a rolled up mattress and a duffle bag.
“I’ve always been inspired by the power of a song.” Steel says. “I love the poetic magic that happens when the lyric and melody marry, letting the listener visit unfamiliar spaces in their heart.”
Steel hand-built and installed recording gear at ‘Steel Mill Studios’, otherwise known as the dining room at his suburban Melbourne home.  Drums were recorded at good friend and drummer Stephen Allred’s home in Ballarat using a small mobile recording setup. Steel’s loungeroom and hallways were also used as studio space. The hallway offered especially good acoustics for the guitars.
Drowning On Dry Land took seven months to make its way down the twisting creative pathway, from the initial stages of writing, re-writes and multiple recordings and arrangement changes,
Previous releases from A.J. Steel include 2009 EP Satellites and Cars. Single Slow Down was added to high rotation on Radar Radio and also featured on Fox FM’s Radar Artist in ‘Australian Made’. Slow Down was also added to Fox’s syndication network of over 4million subscribers Australia-wide.

The National Evening Express launch ‘This Ain’t Real’ at Whole Lotta Love on 28 November!

The National Evening Express will roll into Brunswick East on 28 November to launch their debut single ‘This Ain’t Real’ at Whole Lotta Love in Lygon Street!

A gritty mix of garage band and dirty blues, The National Evening Express will suit those who dig MC5, The Stooges and The Cramps.

The Melbourne based 4-piece features a mix of experienced Australian and New Zealand players whose influences merge and meld, bubbling into a full fever pitch when they perform live.

“This song was written in one afternoon of beer fuelled happiness to encourage you to Let Your Rock Out,” says lead singer and guitarist Sandro.

Here’s an early review for the single:

The National Evening Express – This Ain’t Real

You might recall the story of the Masters’ Apprentices third-greatest song, ‘Undecided’, which they made up on the spot in an early recording session and which much to their surprise (and without their knowledge – until they heard it on the radio) was selected by their record company to be their first single. They heard it in the car driving to a gig and got a surprise.

‘This Ain’t Real’ is ‘Undecided’ in the 21st century. Powerful, primitive, apparently tossed off yet plugged into an ancient theme of desire and demand. …

Textured, epic and propulsive, the song has a lurid vividness few could resist.

Looking forward to more from this exceptionally tight outfit. – Heidi Berg, The Dwarf

The National Evening Express is:

Sandro  – Vocals, Rhythm Guitar

Matt  – Bass, Vocals

Andrew – Lead Guitar

Rikki  – Drums, Vocals

The National Evening Express will release their first studio album later next year so keep your ears open for it!

DIANA MAY CLARK – MEET ‘THE OTHER SIDE OF THE GIRL’ – SUNDAY 30 NOVEMBER – DING DONG IN MELBOURNE

Established Melbourne-based Brazilian song interpreter Diana May Clark launches her debut original album ‘The Other Side of the Girl’ at what is sure to be an amazing and hypnotising album launch party at Ding Dong Lounge on Sunday 30th November.

The much anticipated launch was previewed with two singles (‘Sunny Daze’ and ‘Blueprint’) as well as B-Sides and clips over the past 18 months.

Diana established her interpretive credentials by way of two award winning recordings with Guitarist (now husband) Doug de Vries; her original band “The Sunny Set’ embraces pop and psychedelic styles with her love of Brazilian music into a new mix that is unique and instantly charming.

“From the get go, Diana May Clark & The Sunny Set’s music makes you wanna undulate. Not nod your head, not tap your toes nor click your fingers – you wanna move your hips… Later, you can lie on your back staring at the sky and let the sublime blend of voice and music take you slipping through time like sunshine through tree tops.  You’ll be needing a rest after all that dance floor action.”  Pat Monaghan (Basement Disks)

Refreshingly genuine, brimming with cool guitar riffs, film-noir ripe vocals and kicking grooves;
Diana May Clark and the Sunny  Set are:
DMC – voice & keys
Doug de Vries – electric & acoustic guitars
Al Kerr – Drums, percussion & backing vocals

Maddie Weybury – Bass & backing vocals
(with special guests).

You can expect psychedelic melodies peppered with occasional Portuguese lyrics, film clips, and a rotating stage of talented musicians and dancers – don’t be afraid to dress with a 60s twist (you know you wanna!) and be ready to fall in love with Diana’s new sound!

Mikelangelo launches his new album CITY OF DREAMS at Melbourne Festival – Tues 14, Wed 15 and Thu 16 October

Mikelangelo launches his new album

CITY OF DREAMS at Melbourne Festival

Tues 14, Wed 15 and Thu 16 October

Featuring Clare St Clare and Miles Brown

Internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter and performer Mikelangelo launches his new album CITY OF DREAMS over three nights at the Foxtel Festival Hub at Melbourne Festival on October 14th, 15th and 16th.
City of Dreams had its genesis in the streets of Melbourne two years ago, by accident not design, when Mikelangelo began making up tunes and words while walking through the parks, streets and laneways of the city. He captured these early sketches on his phone and they became his first demo recordings for City Of Dreams. With funding from Arts Victoria, he embarked upon this ambitious recording project at the end of 2013.
Mikelangelo conceived to record each song with a different artist or band, working in various local studios with different engineers and producers including Myles Mumford, Loki Lockwood, Miles Brown and album producers Daniel and Gideon Frankel. Together they have made an album that is a haunting yet celebratory soundtrack to the city. He says:
“I think the best way to make a truly great album is to follow your instinct at every turn and to trust the artists with whom you are collaborating. If you want to make music that will live forever, you have to be brave and completely ignore the rules.”
Through this involved and intuitive approach, an album of great lyrical and musical scope has been produced. The artists who have worked with Mikelangelo on the album have been instrumental in shaping the musical journey, particularly in the case of electronic artist Miles Brown and dream pop singer Clare St Clare. With Mikelangelo they have co-written the brooding and ethereal album opener Lost and the airy and evocative duet Dawn, and have also worked closely together on title track City Of Dreams and the beautiful finale to the album, Closer. Mikelangelo says:
“I think that everyone has their own personal relationship to the city, one that is filled with hope, longing and desire, like a romance with a lover. Each artist I have worked with has brought something of this depth and mystery to the songs, to make an album that is a love letter to the city.”
The album will be released by clandestine new Melbourne label The Imaginarium. The label is the brainchild of award winning producers, Daniel and Gideon Frankel. Inspired by the influential legacy of studio/labels of the 1960s, the Frankel brothers have created their own studio/label to produce and release contemporary classic albums. City Of Dreams will be their first release and Rocket Distribution will handle distribution of the album. City of Dreams will be released worldwide digitally on Tuesday 14 October and will be in-stores in Australia on Friday 17 October. The album is currently available for pre-order as download, CD and limited edition vinyl via Pledge Music.
Mikelangelo would like to thank Arts Victoria for their contribution towards producing CITY OF DREAMS.

City Of Dreams will be launched with a stunning multi-media show with projections by Morganics and featuring an array of amazing guest artists including Clare St Clare, Miles Brown (Night Terrors), Rob Snarski (Black Eyed Susans), Stu Thomas (Kim Salmon, Dave Graney), Jane Hendry and Kelly Day (Broads, Wagons and The Nymphs), Tali (Biddlewood), Dan McKay (The Nation Blue), Justin Rudge (Bakersfield Glee Club) and more mystery guests.

THE ANNUAL AGE MUSIC VICTORIA GENRE AWARDS FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

The second annual Age Music Victoria Genre Awards finalists were announced earlier this morning by Music Victoria CEO Patrick Donovan on The Breakfast Spread radio show with presenting partner PBS.

Specially selected expert panels deliberated over the best music from 1 October 2013 to 1 October 2014 across genres, from jazz to hip hop, global and heavy, and agreed on the top five releases and acts, which can now be revealed.

This year’s nominees cover all genres from jazz to electronic to best experimental avant-garde and nominees include hip hop artists Briggs, Geko, L-Fresh the Lion, Remi and Tornts along with Victoria’s best country acts Eaten By Dogs, Lachlan Bryan & The Wildes, T-Bones, Tracy McNeil and Wagons.

“Last year’s Age Music Victoria Genre Awards highlighted the wonderful breadth of musical talent in Melbourne and throughout our regional areas. It’s fantastic these names are being held up as the best in their field,” said Martin Boulton, Editor of the Shortlist at The Age.

Victoria’s diverse contemporary music scene will be celebrated with the presentation and announcement of 11 genre based awards on Thursday 16th October at an invitation only event.  This is also the 9th year for The Age Music Victoria Awards publicly voted awards and those nominees will be announced at the Genre Awards. Voting will open to the public online at theage.com.au on Friday 17th October and there will also be a rare opportunity to win a few double passes via The Age to the now sold-out public awards night on Wednesday 19th November at 170 Russell Street, Melbourne CBD.

In recognition of the artists’ contribution to Victorian music, all nominees in the Genre Awards will receive a free rehearsal/pre-production package at Bakehouse Studios. Winners in each category will also receive a 10 hour recording package along with this very special prize.

“Victoria is a melting pot of musical styles. The Age Music Victoria Genre Awards were established in 2014 with expert peer voting panels to recognise the most outstanding practitioners in each genre. Congratulations to all the nominees – we look forward to seeing the winners crowned on the 16th of October,” said Music Victoria CEO, Patrick Donovan.

Adrian Basso, PBS General Manager said “PBS106.7FM is once again delighted to be involved in The Age Music Victoria Awards, celebrating Victoria’s rich music culture. Since 1979, PBS has been an intrinsic part of the local music community, broadcasting and supporting all styles of music not heard elsewhere. Full credit to Music Victoria and The Age for committing itself to this initiative, which we are proud to be part of.”
