ADRIAN BELEW POWER TRIO COMING TO OZ!

Enterprise Entertainment present
Adrian Belew Power Trio

“Adrian is the most awesome musician in the world. I’ve never seen anybody play guitar like that.” – Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails)

Adrian Belew will return to Australia in December for the Adelaide Guitar Festival as well as a few East Coast shows. The live show features King Crimson favourites, classics from Adrian’s many solo albums, spirited improvisation, and special solo moments by Adrian.

The self-proclaimed ‘stunt guitarist’ Adrian Belew was famously discovered by Frank Zappa and performed on Zappa’s controversial mega-seller, Sheik Yerbouti. He then quickly developed a reputation as a guitar wizard and the ‘the weapon of choice’ for the likes of David Bowie on Lodger, Talking Heads Remain In Light, Tom Tom Club Tom Tom Club, Paul Simon’s landmark album Graceland, Laurie Anderson Mister Heartbreak, Jean Michel Jarre Zoolook amongst many others. More recently he has contributed to three Nine Inch Nails album’s The Downward Spiral, The Fragile and the instrumental Ghosts I – IV, as well as Tori Amos “Strange Little Girls”.

King Crimson fans however know Adrian Belew as the principle architect (vocals and lead guitar) of the bands sound since he joined them in 1981 and they recorded what many fans (and indeed Robert Fripp himself) consider their finest record, Discipline. The new line-up of Kind Crimson, which transformed a 70’s prog-rock artifact to a blueprint for brilliant guitar-based avant-garde music, continued to live up to the legacy of its namesake with Beat (the follow-up to Discipline). The album contained the minor crossover hit Heartbeat. The subsequent 1984 album Three of a Pair featured Sleepless which most Australian’s will be familiar with as providing the distinctive bass line which intro’s the long running ABC music program Rage.

More than any other musician, Adrian has tirelessly explored the sonic possibilities of the electric guitar. Some of the various awards he has received include ‘Best New Talent Award’ in the Readers’ Poll from Guitar Player Magazine (1982) , ‘Best Experimental Guitarist’ award Guitar Player Magazine (1989 – 1993) and ‘Guitar Innovator Award’ from the Music For Life Alliance (2004). In 2005 he was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

This tour will be the influential musical chameleon’s first ever with his own band in Australia following his tour two years ago with local players to ecstatic reviews and packed rooms. The Adrian Belew Power Trio also consists of Julie Slick (bass) and Eric Slick (drums). The Slicks are a brother and sister duo whom he met at the famous School of Rock (yes, the same one immortalized for the silver screen by Jack Black) when he was there instructing a class of musical whiz kids on how to play and survive in the music business. From there he quickly invited the two most talented kids in the room to join him on tour and they have been touring since 2006, playing together all over the world.

PETER CHAPMAN – ‘CLEANSKIN’

‘Cleanskin’ is Peter Chapman’s first full length CD.

Definition: cleanskin (noun; adjective: plural cleanskins)
1. An undercover police officer who has not done this task before
2. A criminal who has no prior criminal record
3. A terrorist who has not previously come to the attention of the security services
4. An unbranded animal
5. An unlabelled bottle of wine

” I like the idea of this music as ‘cleanskin’, new, freshly bottled – no label,” says singer/songwriter Peter Chapman. The 14 tracks on the cd vary in range and style and offer everything from lush string quartet arrangements to electronica inspired flourishes – all infused with a healthy splash of groove. “This is an organic based record. We laid down the original beds at Sing Sing in Richmond. Flavours in the songs include a four member singing group doing a choral thing and string arrangements for quartet. Overall this album has a real band based feel to it and the mix of songs is very diverse,” says Peter.

Peter Chapman is an experienced singer/songwriter and an exciting performer. He has written songs with other published artists and has contributed tracks to a ‘Warrior Films’ project. He has worked with members of Electric Mary, The Earthmen, The BadLoves, Chocolate Starfish, Boom Crash Opera and Pseudo Echo. In 2005 Peter twice performed tracks from his ‘Catch Fire’ ep on national television and has more recently performed at live gigs with Abby Dobson, Renee’ Geyer and Vika & Linda Bull.

One bottle of ‘Cleanskin’ contains 14 organic, lush, groove inspired, string quartet arranged, electronica kissed, vocal choir infused pop/folk/groove rock tunes to tempt your palette. Enjoy!

Details of Peter’s CD launch for ‘Cleanskin’will be announced in August. Please visit Peter at www.myspace.com/peterchapmansoloartist.

Exclusive preview — ‘Call Girl the Musical!’

Introducing ‘Call Girl The Musical’ by Tracy Harvey – a brand new Australian production set in a call centre. This show is an absolute must see for anyone who’s ever had a job!

NEWS!! ‘Call Girl the Musical’ is pleased to announce one of Australia’s finest performers, Alan Fletcher (Dr Karl – Neighbours Channel 10) performing in the lead male role as super salesman, Frank.

His female counterpart – compulsive volunteer and do-gooder Jean Brown will be played by Tracy Harvey, co-producer and writer.

Tracy says ‘Customer contact centres are the factories of the future – and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it’s not necessarily a good thing, either!” And she speaks from experience. ‘Call Girl The Musical’ was conceived during a 6 week stint in a St Kilda Rd call centre. Tracy was compelled to take notes in between making calls and hasty trips to the Tea Room and those notes eventuated into this tuneful, compelling and hilarious new Australian musical.

‘Call Girl The Musical’ features the voices of Bert Newton and Steve Vizard with a talented ensemble of local actors and is funded by the City of Port Phillip Cultural Development Fund.

‘Call Girl the Musical’ has 23 original songs penned by Harvey, arranged by Jack Howard – (Hunters & Collectors) and performed by the entire singing and dancing cast with the Elwood Dads’ Band & Friends.

‘Call Girl The Musical’ was developed under the watchful eye of local script editor, Doug MacLeod of ‘Kath & Kim.’ It will be directed by dynamic young media producer, Bryce Ives.

A special preview season will run at the Phoenix Theatre in Elwood 23 – 31 October.

You can become a ‘Call Girl’ friend and hear tunes from the musical by visiting www.myspace.com/callgirlbiz.

Barry Adamson – stop press!

Actually, we couldn’t stop the press once the Australian media heard ‘Back To The Cat.’ Everyone from Triple J to ABC Sunday Arts to GQ to major metropolitan newspapers to down and dirty street cred press wanted a chat. And we got most of them in, too.

You can see a portion of the press reviews/interviews and see the sublime Barry Adamson here: http://barryadamsonausmedia.wordpress.com (or click on the pic below to link in a new window).

BARRY ADAMSON TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED – JUNE ’08!

To: Interested persons

Barry Adamson has been doing things differently ever since he strapped on a bass guitar, scoring the chart single, ‘Shot by Both Sides’ while playing for ex-Buzzcocks singer Howard Devoto’s Manchester based Magazine as a teenager in late Seventies. He played on all of Magazine’s seminal post-punk albums, and contributed to Devoto’s solo album and his next band, Luxuria. He also contributed to the studio band Visage, playing in the ensemble’s first two albums, Visage and The Anvil.

When Magazine disbanded, five albums later in 1981, his definitive touch was spotted by Nick Cave of The Birthday Party, with whom he played.

After that band’s final implosion in 1983, Barry became a founding member of The Bad Seeds, along with Nick Cave, Mick Harvey and Blixa Bargeld. He appeared in four of that band’s albums: ‘From Her to Eternity’, ‘The Firstborn Is Dead’, ‘Kicking Against the Pricks’ and ‘Your Funeral, My Trial’ before deciding rock music was too restricting a format for his ideas.

Mute recognised Barry’s potential and offered him a solo deal in 1987, resulting in the 1988 single ‘The Man With The Golden Arm’ – a cinematic statement of intent.

Nurturing a vision of The Great Soundtrack, Barry returned to Manchester’s mean streets to compose the autobiographical thriller ‘Moss Side Story’ (1989). The album so effectively told the story of a film that doesn’t exist that it wasn’t long before calls were coming in from David Lynch, Allison Anders and Derek Jarman. The following ‘Soul Murder’ was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 1992 and also caught the ear of Oliver Stone, who lifted three tracks in sequence for his groundbreaking movie ‘Natural Born Killers.’
Barry would continue to alternate between writing soundtracks and the acclaimed albums ‘Oedipus Schmoedipus’ (1995), ‘As Above, So Below’ (1998), ‘The Murky World of Barry Adamson’ (1999), ‘The King of Nothing Hill’ (2002) and ‘Stranger on the Sofa’ (2006).

While exploring new sounds and styles with each release, Barry’s lyrics continued to investigate the themes closest to his heart: identity, sexuality, race, spirituality, society and the all façades in between. His ongoing fascination with pop culture, graphic design, film, art, crime and outsider fiction have constantly brought new angles and details to be poured over by a constantly fascinated and fascinating mind.

Barry’s eighth album, ‘Back To The Cat’, reflects a life’s dedication to the Big Themes both in music and life and is his second release for his own “production home”, Central Control International.

It is The Big One – the boldest, most brilliant album of his career.

It is therefore fitting that at the height of his long and distinguished career Barry finally makes his long awaited first solo tour of Australia. Mr. Adamson will be accompanied by a full 5 piece band and will be performing selections from his entire solo career to date.

US Soul Man, Blues Brother & Stax Recording Artist Eddie Floyd in Oz – 1 SHOW ONLY!

eddielive1.jpg

Hey Soul Diggas,

For one night only … Friday, 11 April 2008 … Prince Bandroom, St Kilda

The Harlem Dukes present

Stax soul legend EDDIE FLOYD (USA) with THE BAMBOOS

Together with Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett, EDDIE FLOYD is one of the most important figures in southern soul music.

As a performer ‐ he was a hitmaker for the now‐legendary Stax Records out of Memphis Tennessee. EDDIE FLOYD was Stax’s no. 2 male vocalist after Otis Redding and had hits with “Knock on Wood”, “Big Bird”, “634 5789”, “Bring It on Home” and “Never Found a Girl” which are all Southern Soul classics.

He toured the world throughout the 1960s with the Stax Soul Revue also featuring Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T & the MGs, Carla Thomas and Arthur Conley.

As a composer – EDDIE FLOYD wrote hits for Carla Thomas (“Comfort Me”), Wilson Picket (“634 5789”, “99 and Half”), Sam
& Dave (“You Don’t Know What You Mean to Me”) and Otis Redding (“I Love You More Than Words Can Say”) amongst
others.

This will be EDDIE FLOYD’s first Australia tour in his own right, having been to Melbourne only once before ‐ with the Blues Brothers Band in 1993. Melbourne’s own princes of super‐heavy funk, THE BAMBOOS will provide stellar back‐up, as they did for New Orleans funk great Eddie Bo on his recent tour.

With the rise of new bands like Sharon Jones and the Dap‐Kings, Budos Band, Osaka Monorail and The Bamboos, soul and funk music around the world is more popular than ever been. But, there’s nothing like the old‐school and original artists have also reaped the benefit with Betty Harris, Eddie Bo and Solomon Burke all selling out recent concerts. There’s no bigger name in soul and funk than EDDIE FLOYD.

Don’t miss Eddie knockin’ out the hits he wrote and recorded for Stax records from 1965 on, including ‘Knock On Wood’, ‘634 5789’, ‘Raise Your Hand’ and ‘Big Bird.’

DARLING DOWNS HEAD SOUTH TO THE EAST!

web-presence-darling web-tree-darling Hey Music Lovers,

Fresh from Kim Salmon’s induction into the AGE EG Music Awards Hall Of Fame and on the eve of Kim’s Scientists reuinion tour and Ron Peno’s Died Pretty tour, The Darling Downs will be performing songs from their new southern tinged CD ‘From One To Another’ at the East Brunswick Club, 280 Lygon Street, East Brunswick on Friday, Jan 4. They will be joined by Mike Noga and the Gentlemen of Fortune. Tix are available at the door for $18.

The Darling Downs received high praise for their debut album ‘How Can I Forget This Heart Of Mine’, including raves from both Mojo and UnCut magazines in the UK and wide critical praise all around Australia.

‘From One To Another’ is following in the same sure-footed direction with a stack of glowing new reviews:

“…the album’s sparseness only helps highlight Salmon’s unusual finger picking style, giving Peno’s wavering vocals room to soar.” – Beat

“Darling Downs showcases (Peno) in whiskey-soaked country mode, though with the shades and subtleties that make him so spellbinding, while Salmon provides outstanding backing guitar and banjo.” – Rave

“The second album is a distinctly minimal affair, Peno’s emotive vocals dominating the stripped-back preceedings. Salmon shines with his understated accompaniment, utilizing soft guitars and banjo to superb effect.” – Time Off

“This album is peppered with highlights sweet and sad…” The AGE EG

“…more understated and sombre than you would expect from the Salmon/Peno union but in it’s own right From One To Another is as eccentric a release as any of those from the duo’s previous incarnations.” – Xpress

“…a soulful sweet tonic it is.” – Leader Newspapers

From One To Another was recorded at Dave Graney and Clare Moore’s Ponderosa Studio and includes 11 new songs – sort of hillbilly jazz free form tunes. A little bit of Appalachian music blended with a uniquely Australian sensibility to create a new sound that Salmon has dubbed “Countripolitan.” Don’t miss your chance to head South at the East with the Darling Downs.

‘From One To Another’ is out through MGM Records in Australia and through Carrot Top Records in the US.

Please ring Karen on 0400 527 365 to arrange an interview, a live-to-air or to get a CD for airplay or review.

Visit The Darling Downs at www.myspace.com/thedarlingdowns for more info.
