It’s a Mod, Mod Mod World! Matinee single launch for Pollydevlins ‘(Can’t) Give You Love’ @ Gasometer, 19 October

It’s a Mod, Mod, Mod, Mod World!

The Pollydevlins release their debut single ‘ (Can’t) Give You Love!’
at Gasometer Hotel, Smith St, Sun 19 October, special matinee show – 4pm
with
The Sons of Mod & Lara Travis
The Grand Rapids
and MC Andrew McCulloch – direct from Liverpool, England
Tickets $10 on the door

Energetic, raw and genuine, The Pollydevlins have been ripping up the Melbourne and Adelaide soul-blues/rock scene with their original, hard-driving garage mod sound, fronted by the astonishing vocals of Kaliah Alice.

Channelling mid-60’s British Mod bands with lashings of US West Coast psychedelia with a nod to 60’s era women of rock Grace Slick and Janis Joplin, the Pollydevlins have blended these ingredients into a unique recipe for groove.

Now they’re launching their first single ‘(Can’t) Give You Love’, available as 7” vinyl single in a full-colour groovy jacket!
The tune, Kaliah says, “Is something of an homage to party girls and floozies.  ‘(Can’t) Give You Love’ is a song about a flirtatious girl who wants to hear all your secrets and go to parties, but when it comes to the crunch, her love is not on offer…but the groove and passion are available by the bucket load!”

Hard-driving and funky, the track is a perfect showcase for the free-style fire of Kaliah’s vocals and David Glavich’s virtuoso rock-blues guitar licks, driven by the powerhouse rhythm section of Amr Zaid’s bass and Mentor Ejupi’s drums, with delectable keys from Dan Webb.

The Pollydevlins were founded one spring night when Kaliah (formerly of SAMIA award winners Munchkin) and Amr (Triple J darlings Ratcat) got together in the fading hours of an 18 hour house party in Adelaide and spontaneously started writing songs. They continued writing, developing a unique mix of soul/pop substance with style, based on Kaliah’s ability to really, truly sing the blues, along with Amr’s love of 60’s garage, blues and soul, and strong and original pop instrumentation and arrangements.

The band have just returned from wowing them at the 50 Years of MOD fest in Adelaide and are about to launch themselves at ya at The Gasometer, 19 October. Doors open 4 pm.
Check them out on youtube here:  http://youtu.be/LO9pcJbhPeg
Get your mod on and get your bod on over to Gasometer to celebrate the 7″ vinyl release ‘(Can’t) Give You Love’ with the Pollydevlins!

The Acfields launch debut album ‘The Acfields’ with four state tour on September 25 @Toff In Town!

The Acfields launch debut album ‘The Acfields’ with four state tour on September 25!

Acclaimed brother and sister duo, The Acfields (Dan and Hannah) are launching their self-titled album with the single ‘No Ups Or Downs’, a sweetly rocking, wry observation of self-contained emotional distance:

“I feel nothing at all
Like a straight line to the sun
I feel nothing at all
I ain’t got no ups or downs”

The 11 track album was recorded in Dan’s place in Brisbane and at a friend’s on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.  Written and recorded over 20 months, the album was crowdfunded with love and a contribution of $10,000 from Acfields fans. It was mixed and engineered at Nicky Bomba’s studio and mastered at Sing Sing by Ross Cockle.

Keeping to the punishing schedule of each Acfield writing a new song every two weeks, discipline was maintained with a penalty system — missed deadlines meant loss of coffee privileges for Hannah and loss of tea for Dan.

Hannah said, “Recording on the Mornington Peninsula was my fav part of the process. Being in a house and not a studio meant we had to make do with the items around us (apart from the recording equipment).
“At one stage we had firewood keeping a mic stand stable on the floor. And we rigged up a vocal booth with some mattresses and blankets! Recording in a house meant we had be mindful of the outside noise.
“At one point when Dan was recording acoustic guitar the birds were going crazy, so I had to patrol the perimeter of the house to keep them down. Bird patrol with a broomstick!”

Dan said, “I love how organically we created this album. We pieced it together bit by bit in houses and studios at different ends of the country – a bit like creating a patchwork quilt inspired by the location, musical friends that contributed and the time that we took to make sure it was right.

“Although there is obviously planning and pre-production, you never quite know how it will turn out when you start out and it’s so exciting to see how the production evolves. Ask Hannah – I’m a real perfectionist so it means a lot when I say that I’m truly satisfied and proud of what we’ve created.”

The Acfields started as a side project for Dan and Hannah, both of whom had successful solo careers as songwriters and performers. It didn’t take long for them and their fans to realise that together they were something special. They’ve since received wide acclaim, including a spot in the 4ZZZ Hottest 100.

They are veterans of many national tours and have performed with acts like Josh Pyke, The Trouble With Templeton, Lakyn Heperi and Vika & Linda Bull.

They can’t wait to hit the road and share the new album with the world, as well as their endearing on-stage sibling banter around the country.

“The ying to each other’s yang”

“Emotionally charged…with strong vocals”
Maggie Collins, Triple J

“Naturally charismatic performers”
Jeremy Millar, Beat Magazine

“We think these guys are something special”

“Blessed with a great deal of musical talent”
Forte Magazine
I really feel this twosome. There’s so much emotion in the music they create… I can only imagine how much they’d impress in the live arena.”
Sounds of Oz
One of the least pretentious bands you’re ever likely to see. Sterling Harmonies.
Andy Hazel
An expressive voice that engages you instantly
Wally de Backer (Gotye) – on Hannah Acfield
“Your songs sound pure, raw and honest- in the sense that it feels like you’ve really poured everything into them, they are in pure form and I think that’s what makes them really beautiful”
Amandah Wilkinson (Operator Please) on Dan Acfield

Celebrate UN International Day of Peace – Sunday September 21 – Wishing Trees Peace Day Project

PRESENTED BY AUSTRALIANS FOR PEACE

Australians for Peace are proud to present their ‘Wishing Trees Peace Day Project’ to commemorate the UN International Day of Peace.
Set in the heart of Melbourne at City Square on Sunday, September 21, olive trees will line the square and Australians For Peace (A4P) extends an invitation to the people of Melbourne to write their messages of peace on shipping tags, which will adorn the trees.  Melbourne’s best loved artist Michael Leunig has generously donated the attached Peace Duck artwork to decorate the shipping tags.
The Wishing Trees Peace Day Project runs from 10AM to 3PM and will be opened by Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne Susan Riley. There will also be acoustic performances at this carbon neutral and family friendly event.

Trees have historically been used as an object for wishes throughout the ages worldwide and across many cultures and have even been identified as possessing special spiritual values. The olive tree was chosen because its branches have been a symbol of peace since 5th century BC and ancient Greeks believed that it drove away evil spirits.
A4P Chairman Mike Zafiropoulos AM, said “Melbourne’s population is made up of more than 240 national backgrounds and represents almost all the cultures and faiths of the world. We are recognised worldwide as one of the world’s most livable cities. As a truly multicultural society we are uniquely placed to be an example to the rest of the world as a peaceful and cohesive society.
We are partnering with like-minded organisations and individuals including the UN Association of Victoria in the hope that Melbourne can truly become known as a “City of Peace”.
A4P is a group of Melbourne individuals from varied backgrounds, who are inspired and encouraged by the belief that living in a peaceful world is a fundamental human right.
A4P has partnered with the UN Asssociation of Victoria to host other activities to celebrate UN International Day of Peace, including a free lunchtime concert at Federation Square on the 19th of September and the inaugural Red Hot Peace gig at Toff In Town on the  21st of September. Further information will be announced in coming days.

A4P is grateful to the Victorian Multicultural Commission for their financial support for this initiative and to Michael Leunig for his wonderful generosity in providing the Peace Duck.

‘No Love Lost’ – highly anticipated new album by former Glide guitarist Andy Kentler to be released at Yah Yah’s – Saturday 11 October!

No Love Lost, the highly anticipated new album by former Glide guitarist Andy Kentler, will be officially released at Yah Yah’s on Saturday 11th October.

Andy Kentler and band will be joined by the enigmatic Brian Henry Hooper (Beasts of Bourbon, Surrealists) and the moody and emotive Rachel Shaw Band. Doors open at 8pm.

Tix available at Yah Yah’s: 99 Smith St Collingwood.

‘No Love Lost’ contains 11 original songs written and produced by Andy Kentler. The LP was tracked to 2” tape by Rob Long and mixed by influential mixer/producer Lindsay Gravina (Rowland S Howard, Magic Dirt, The Living End) at Birdland Studios. The album features Jon Shannon guitar, Nick Blanch bass, Alex Deegan on drums and guest spots by Dave Moll (St.Kilda stalwart), Don Ely (Shivers,Gamma Rays) and the legendary Ed Bates (The Sports) on pedal steel guitar.

As a musician Andy Kentler is known for his work with highly revered Sydney band Glide (sadly disbanded after the death of William Arthur), as bass player with surf/soundtrack instrumental band The Gamma Rays and for his acclaimed debut album ‘Move On’. Here on his second LP he ropes in a bunch of old friends, liquors them up and produces a bunch of well-crafted, memorable songs of varying styles.

Early reviews cite influences as diverse as “ …Tom Petty, Lou Reed, Springsteen and Ray Davies – Getting’ On Home’ is in Petty mode, with slide guitar in the chorus and the Smokey blues style of ‘Invisible’ has a touch of Pink Floyd in its DNA.  He excels with story-styled melodies like ‘Marnie & Stan’, ‘Walk Out On Me’ and the memorable ‘Nobody’s Fool’. There is plenty here to recommend, so I would add this to your list of artists to keep your eye on.”
— Powerpopholic

“His music is a fusion of Tom Petty, The Kinks and Big Star and there are plenty of standout tracks here. ‘Gettin’ on Home’ opens the album in Petty style, tough and melodic. ‘Big Hits & Misses’ is brash, radio-ready power pop with a big hooky chorus, and ‘Marnie & Stan’ tells the story of a couple on the run in rocking fashion (with ‘ooh-la-la-la’ backing vocals). Kentler saves the best for the latter part of the album, with ‘Walk Out on Me’ pure power pop in the vein of the aforementioned Chris Richards, and the catchy ‘Nobody’s Fool’ closing things out.

— absolutepowerpop.blogspot.com.au

Andy has played venues large and small over the years, toured Australia and America with Glide playing a premier show at South by South West and supporting international acts such as Blur, The Posies and Luna. He is very excited to launch ‘No Love Lost’ at Yah Yah’s on 11th October

‘No Love Lost’ LP available now on limited edition coloured vinyl, CD and digital download.

THOMAS HUGH to launch ‘SUM =’ ep on Friday, 26 September -@ Wesley Anne

Austin Texas native Thomas Hugh will play songs from his sparkling new ep Sum = at Wesley Anne at 8pm on Friday 26 September.  Tckets are $15 on the door and the door price includes a copy of the 5 song ep.

Sum = is a combustion of new-folk and indie pop, with old time storytelling and the occasional grand flourish thrown in for good measure.

A recent import to Melbourne, Thomas relocated in 2008 and the five songs on ‘Sum =’  are a rich blend of the influences of the two colourful musical cities Thomas has inhabited for most of his life.

Thomas said “I’ve been away from Austin for a few years now but the first thing I do when I get there is hit a cool blues bar like the Continental Club and drink beer made in Texas.  There’s nothing quite like it, but Melbourne is a great city with its own character.  Of course, the traffic is just as bad.”

Thomas has relased three albums Always Going Somewhere, Welcome to Yikesville and Strange Company, over the last six years but says, “I had the most amazing time recording the new EP.  I wanted  to really strip it back.  I wanted the songs to sound as if we were playing them in your lounge room…bum notes and all.  I wanted to keep it honest so we did just a few takes of each song and that was it.”

Sum = was recorded with Roger Bergodaz (drums), Dean Addison (bass) and Shannon Bourne (guitar).  It creates a sound that hints at a solid blend of excellent musical influences and a natural affinity for melody and telling a twisted tale.

A stylistic sampler, Sum = features the emotive, poignant Them Dams Never Break, the breezy 70’s California echo of Chrome Bike and the spooky harmonica tinged ode to a girl with Dylan posters Where All the Spiders Crawl, to a journey through to country life with Little Things (Sting)

The first single to be lifted from the EP is the harmony infusedbittersweet love song Canterbury Road:

She bloodied my blue skies

but kissed me when we’d drive

down Canterbury Road

Thomas plays gigs large and small around Melbourne town and beyond and this ep was inspired by a gig at Maldon Festival, which Thomas says, “…really opened the floodgates and these songs just rolled out, as sometimes happens after a particularly inspiring gig.”

Don’t miss Thomas Hugh playing songs from  Sum = at Wesley Anne at 8pm on Friday 26 September with support from Dan Lethbridge.
