SVENSSON – AUSTRALIAN PERDITION TOUR OF THE GLOOMY POP ALCHEMIST DECEMBER ’07

scene-sven-pricci-blog1.jpg

A deep fragile fallen angel’s voice, delicately wild lyrics gambling dangerously with despair and combined with a gloomy franco-british pop sound reconciles Serge Gainsbourg and The Cure, or Françoiz Breut and Lloyd Cole.

Two years after the release of ‘ Aux Jours Meilleurs’ (On Better Days ), a debut album that won wide acclaim from enlightened media (from Paris-based renowned cultural magazine Les Inrockuptibles to the major radio France Inter and on indie radio worldwide), the scandinavian-named french boy has landed in on our coasts with an intransigently beautiful new album ‘Perdition.’

SvenSson’s music distills mixed influences from the Joy Division’s and The Smiths’ new-wave cool and modern french songwriters’ intimate literary influences with an an unrestrained mixture of hypertensive electric explosions and naked moments of grace.

In concert, alone in pub cellars as well as under the bright lights of big stages, the alchemist from Toulouse is joined by folk guitars, violin and “cellobass”,to create his own unique blend of baroque rock. SvensSson has played in France and Denmark for both his “Better Days” and “Perdition” Tours, sharing unplugged gigs with some of the most elegant representatives of the french (Miossec, Daniel Darc, Da Silva, Prohom, Nicholson, Verone, Miro) or anglo-saxon (Andrew Bird, The National, The Posies) indie-pop-folk-rock scene. SvenSson and his inspired team will be on the road again in December ‘07 for an “Australian Perdition Tour.”

“SvenSson combines heavenly and abyssal zones like never before (…) a seriously distressed dandy.”

THE AGE EG MUSIC AWARDS 2007!

album62.jpg

The Age EG Music Awards 2007

It was one of the most memorable gigs of last year, when everyone from Paul Kelly to Dallas Crane, Barnesy and Bonnie Tyler helped The Age EG celebrate its 21st Birthday at the Prince Bandroom. And now The Age EG Music Awards are back with a vengeance. The concert, to be held at St Kilda’s Prince Bandroom on November 30, will star one of the hottest rock bands in the country, the Living End, in their only gig of the year. The EG Allstars house band will get together again to play a bunch of songs (originals and covers), with guest singers including Angie Hart, Clare Bowditch, Joe Camilleri and X’s Steve Lucas, while Jet’s Nic Cester performs his band’s songs acoustically.

The EG Music Awards, which will be decided by readers, will be presented on the night. The awards honour the best music of 2007 and will introduce a new inductee into the Hall of Fame alongside inaugural inductees TISM. Last year’s awards generated 37,000 votes. Readers can have their say this year by visiting http://egawards.theage.com.au/

The Big Day Out’s Vivian Lees said the inaugural awards filled a gap in the contemporary entertainment scene. “It was great because the audience members voted and importantly because the musicians embraced it and made it a big success with a lot of nice musical performances which you hardly see accept at genuine events.”

Tickets are only $30 (plus b/f) on sale today from record stores, the Prince public bar, www.princebandroom or 9536 1168

See you at the Prince on 30th November for a great night of music and merriment!

Cheers,

xKaren

DARLING DOWNS LAUNCH ‘FROM ONE TO ANOTHER’!

dd.jpg

‘Alt country tag inadequate, A brave move for both brilliantly pulled off.’ – four stars – Sharon O’Connel – Uncut

‘An understated gem” – four stars – Max Decharne – Mojo

Such were the praises sung for Scientists Kim Salmon and Died Pretty boy Ron Peno’s Darling Downs debut album How Can I Forget This Heart Of Mine.

From One To Another follows its predecessor down the One Guitar, One Voice path but brings along a banjo along for some of the journey.

Kim says “The banjo is a new thing to me, but it felt good in my hands. I wasn’t even sure how to tune it. Sometimes it sounds a bit like a sitar, which I believe is frowned upon in purist bluegrass circles, but I like those sounds, so we kept them. And it was a natural fit with Ron’s lyrics, which are a product of his mad alchemy and his particular brand of genius. They were written on the spot at Dave Graney and Clare Moore’s Ponderosa Studio. What we ended up with is 11 new songs – sort of hillbilly jazz free form tunes.”

So purists be damned, whatever the ghost of Bill Monroe might think, you will definitely approve!

From One To Another is out through MGM Records here in Australia and through Carrot Top Records in the US.

The Darling Downs will launch From One To Another:

1 November, Ruby’s Love Lounge, Burwood Highway, Belgrave at 10pm, $15
2 November, The National, Moorabool St, Geelong at 11pm, $15
3 November, The East Brunswick Club, Lygon St, E Brunswick, 11pm, $20
7 November, The Vanguard, King St, Newtown, Sydney, NSW, 11pm, $20

RENEE’ GEYER LIVE AT MILANOS SATURDAY!

Renee’ Geyer

Hey soul lovas,

Australia’s First Lady Of Soul Ms Renee’ Geyer will be performing live at Milanos Brighton Beach Hotel on Saturday, 8 September. Tickets are available from the venue for $33 show only and $65 two course dinner and show, but they’re nearly sold out so get in now!

MILANOS BRIGHTON BEACH HOTEL
4 The Esplanade, Brighton ph: 9592 3555

Renee’ will be singing songs old and new, and you’ll be treated to a preview of the tunes from her brand new cd.

‘Dedicated’ is Renée Geyer’s twenty-second album. And she’s convinced with this record she’s reached a turning point.

“I do rhythm and blues,” Renée explains. “This genre of music picked me. I didn’t pick it. From a very early age I was listening to it on my transistor radio under my pillow. At fourteen or fifteen years of age I knew that this was the music I connected with. With this record I’ve turned some kind of corner where the suit that was bought for me as a young girl, that I knew was a beautiful suit, only just now fits. It just feels right.

Rave reviews for ‘Dedicated’ are already beginning to roll in:

“I’m in love with this record. I have to admit it. This time, I really am. Normally, I’m over it by the time, through the process of recording and then mixing and mastering, we’ve heard everything a million times over and over again. It’s kind of like when couples fall in ‘love/lust’, get married…and then the ‘lust’ part of the relationship fades. This album sounds and feels as fresh as ever….every time I hear it (thanks in no small part to the incredible musicians appearing on it.) I’m still in ‘lust/love’. End of story.”- Ed Nimmervoll

See you at Milanos for a night of incredible soul shakin’ music with that divine diva Ms Renee’!

This week on Spicks and Specks: solo artist & Squeeze frontman Glenn Tilbrook, charismatic comedian Denise Scott, stunning soprano Antoinette Halloran and Melbourne comic Matt Hardy.

This week’s show also features the amazing voice of CW Stoneking and his Primitive Horn Orchestra, performing an original song called “Dodo Blues”.

How much sleep had Glenn had when this gig was filmed? About a half an hour after a long plane ride from London with his family.

glenncol72dpi.jpgBut did he nail it on the night? Oh yeah, he did.

And then he set out on a motorhome trek across Australia with the whole crew playing gigs to the delight of fans young and old, touring in a fabulous Jayco RV. Many thanks to Jayco!

Glenn also thanks the good people (most especially Miss Sancia Robinson) for providing the first aid cot at the ABC for that 1/2 hour nap before the taping!

MOON LANTERN FESTIVAL!

Moon Lantern Festival continues to reinvent age old community celebration!

This local celebration of an ancient traditional Chinese and Vietnamese ritual is held each year at the Richmond Housing Estate to the delight of thousands. The Moon Lantern Festival has proved over the years to be a model of community cultural development and has found a place in the hearts of the 6,000 plus people who come together each year at this colourful event to celebrate and commune with their families and their neighbours, both within the estate and in the wider community.

Liss Gabb, Artistic Director of the Festival, says “On a recent trip to Vietnam I found that many of the Moon Lantern traditions are being eroded by the recent development of consumerist culture, so the Richmond Moon Lantern Festival is helping to both preserve and reinvent the ancient traditions of this age old harvest celebration. This year we will focus on creating lanterns and installations out of recycled materials that are associated with consumerism and the age of disposable products. We’re very lucky to have artist Amanda King, renowned festival and large scale installation artist directing the Lantern Parade and lantern making workshops.”

The Moon Lantern Festival is free and open to all members of the public. The day’s activities begin at 3pm and include the free lantern making workshops and activities for kids, followed at 6pm by the famously colourful and luminous lantern lighting and parade. This ritualised walk for all ages will pass a series of spectacular installations as it weaves its way around the Richmond estate at dusk. Multicultural food will be served all day, followed by a fantastic hip hop finale featuring African and Asian dance groups strutting their stuff and concluding with a spectacular fireworks display!
