INTRODUCING VCEnglish, YOUR MOBILE TUTOR

Introducing VCEnglish, ‘your mobile tutor’

A new mobile app for VCE students created by local education specialist

We are very pleased to announce the new VCEnglish iPhone App for Victorian VCE English/EAL students — with an Android version coming soon!

This app has been created by experienced VCE teacher, Victorian English textbook author and English Exam assessor, Anne Mitchell.

Anne says, “I’ve never been in the business of creating apps until now, but I am in the education business and I realised there was a real need for students to have a VCE tutor on hand 24/7 through their mobile devices when I first noticed students were bringing tablets into classes instead of exercise books.

“I’m an old hand at all things VCE and textbooks but the world of apps was new to me. It took a lot longer and was a lot harder than I anticipated, but we really got it right and I’m absolutely thrilled with the final product.

“Every part of the app is a toolkit that everyone can start using right away, learning to study and write more effectively, immediately.

“There’s step by step instructions dealing with every part of the course in plain language. It’s functional, easy to navigate and users can even reach me in person to answer any questions via the vcenglish.com.au website.”

While developed primarily as a tool for VCE students, VCEnglish has also turned out to be a multi-function tool for anyone serious about getting the written English language right. English teachers, journalists, in fact every writer can benefit from the sections about spelling rules, punctuation, grammar and jargon

The iOS app is available from the Apple App Store for $8.49.

Sex On Toast are probably the greatest band on earth. They are nine men, and between them they possess all the raw sexual power of Prince, the musical prowess of James Brown and the cheesy goodness of an‘80s game show host. Sex On Toast bring the ruckus.” – themusic.com.au, Inpress Magazine. Kate Kingsmill, writer for The Age.

SEX ON TOAST DEBUT NEW SINGLE ‘HOLD MY LOVE’ IN THE LEAD UP TO THEIR MELBOURNE ALBUM LAUNCH:

Sex On Toast proudly released their new single, the supasmooth falsetto-laden slow jam “Hold My Love” from their long awaited self-titled nine song debut album recently on Triple RRR with Chris Gill on Get Down.

Another decadent music video is expected for release in late March with director Peter Savieri featuring a robbery at an exclusive rooftop soirée filled with sexy socialites.

The buzz is well and truly underway for their hometown album launch at Northcote Social Club on March 28th and subsequent East Coast tour dates including their debut extravaganza in Sydney at the Vanguard on April 9th.

BAND INFO:

A nine man explosion of 1980’s pop music, yacht-rock, R’n’B, and synth-funk, Sex On Toast showcase undeniable musical finesse whilst never taking themselves too seriously.

Their outrageous live show features tight vocal harmonies, talk-box synthesizers, drum-machines and choreographed dance moves.  They’re consistently engaging an ever expanding audience of both chin-stroking musicians and teenage revellers.

Through word of mouth alone, Sex On Toast quickly become a cult favourite in Melbourne, regularly packing out local venues. The band has hosted several residencies at The Toff In Town, The Empress and The Evelyn Hotel, including a highly successful residency with the Vaudeville Smash in January 2013, and a sell-out residency in September 2012.

The band has featured at the Bedroom Philosopher’s “High School Assembly” Melbourne International Comedy Festival (2012),  ‘An Evening With Sex On Toast’ at the Adelaide Fringe (2012), Junction Festival Launceston (2012), and every year at The Village at Falls Festival since 2009 including both Marion Bay and Lorne festivals. In 2013 Sex On Toast performed at the Apollo Bay Music Festival and on ‘What Is Jazz?’ talk show for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

Current members and alumni of Sex On Toast can also be seen in a wide array of groups such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Saskwatch, True Live, Vaudeville Smash, James Morrison’s band and The Australian Art Orchestra.

They have shared bills with internationally acclaimed comedian Neil Hamburger (USA), The Barons Of Tang, Hiatus Kaiyote, Vaudeville Smash, Laneous And The Family Yah and The Bedroom Philosopher.

TOO MUCH WATER IN THE BOAT – CHARLES JENKINS & THE ZHIVAGOS – LAUNCH MAR 2ND AT NORTHCOTE SOCIAL CLUB

Don’t miss Charles Jenkins and The Zhivagos launching their new album ‘Too Much Water In The Boat’ at Northcote Social Club Sunday March 2nd (Matinee Show) With Very Special Guests Suzannah Espie & The Last Word!

Album review quotes:a1118644686_2

‘Too Much Water In The Boat’

“Water, drought and flood, the cooling drink, the dangerous current. Water is inevitably at the heart of the Australian story, and Charles Jenkins dives right in with new album Too Much Water In The Boat, a collection of songs inspired by our oceans and rivers and our relationship to them, from the twanging surf rock of The Prime Minister Is Missing to the humorous tale of a crossdressing bushranger and deeply emotional contemplations of love, loss, the search for the inland sea and hopes of a new life dashed on the rocks. One of Australia’s finest songwriters just keeps getting better with the years.”

Noel Mengel, The Courier-Mail. Brisbane

“Surfing the crest of the zeitgeist, songwriter Charles Jenkins delivers yet another sparkling musical distillation of life as it’s lived on this planet. His deft rhymes unfurl over deep oceans of melody to form wave after wave of pure listening pleasure. Cross-dressing bushrangers, dancing emus, and love amidst a tsunami all play a part in Jenkins’ singular and undeniably catchy worldview. Take the plunge and luxuriate in these epic waters!”

Peter Lubin – Producer/Writer, New York City

“Weigh the anchor and clear the decks . . . Charles Jenkins & The Zhivagos “Too Much Water…” is a masterpiece. From the broiling breakers of ‘The Prime Minister Is Missing’, the calenture-crazed Ahab leading Willard’s crew in ‘The Whale Song’ and the sunlit tree-top pop of ‘7 Creeks (The Crossdresser Steve Hart)’ to the ache and anger of ‘The Barrel Song’ and ‘Christmas Island’, this is no three hour tour – this is the sound of a fearless crew on the voyage of a lifetime. Welcome aboard. I’m calling it early – one of the albums of the year.”

Pat Monaghan – Basement Discs, Melbourne

April 19  – Recycled Roots Revolution  – Bendigo

Cigar box guitar. Dobro. Mandolin. Lap steel. There is nothing with strings that Justin Johnson does not simply shred like evidence.
Paul Schomer, NPR music producer

Hailed by Guitar World as a must see act and dubbed “The Wizard” for his mastery of stringed instruments, Justin Johnson has earned many accolades including a 1st place win in the Slidestock International Slide Guitar Competition.  His virtuosic playing style has earned him endorsements from guitar and instrument builders around the world.  Justin is also one of a select few guitarists that have been hand picked to perform for the Woodstock International Luthier’s Showcase in the USA, and the Deloraine Stringfest in Australia, highlighting the work of many of the finest acoustic guitar builders in the world.
Justin Johnson is one of the premier cigar box guitar performers playing today, highlighting the traditional American Roots instrument in a way that honors the history of the instrument while innovating new approaches by incorporating modern technology.  Justin expertly builds layers of music to create a full-band show as a soloist, incorporating up to a dozen stringed instruments including one-string diddley bows, acoustic and electric six-string guitars, twelve-string guitar, cigar box guitars, resonators, mandolin and percussion.
With a style firmly rooted in Blues tradition, but not afraid to break new ground, Justin’s unique sound is the direct result of his passion for combining and advancing widely varying musical forms from all corners of the world.  The result is a sound unlike any other: sincere and soulful explorations, waxing between playful romps across the strings, hauntingly pensive Gypsy dreamscapes, and gritty, driving Blues.
Justin has shared bills with many well-known acts such as The Allman Brothers, Victor Wooten, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Jeff Coffin, Widespread Panic, Matisyahu, Tim Reynolds and Chris Thomas King, among others.
Justin’s innovative approach is garnering strong international attention. We are proud to be introducing 2014 tour dates Australia.
