Marilyn Rose and the Thorns present their debut album “Antarctica” – Live at Lyrebird Lounge Friday 4th December

Marilyn Rose and the Thorns are pleased to present their debut album “Antarctica”.

Marilyn Rose and the Thorns will launch “Antarctica” at the Lyrebird Lounge on Friday 4th December with support from Lilith Lane (solo).

Marilyn Rose and the Thorns emerged from the St Kilda live music community circa 2010. Vocalist Marilyn Rose Veil, guitarist Leon Storch (Smoke Machine), guitarist Rusty Teluk (Cold Harbour), bassist Col Holst (ColdHarbour/Scourge) and drummer Jim Richter (Death Sentence/12FU) first met at the Greyhound Hotel in St Kilda during the front bars glory days. Together they produce a rare and sensual explosion of vocals and an utterly unique blend of rock and roll styles.

Marilyn Rose and The Thorns performances are emotive, dramatic, sorrowful, full of darkness and cabaret with elements of pop and avant-garde. Marilyn’s persona is equal parts Shirley Bassey, David Bowie and Siouxsie Sioux.

Marilyn Rose & The Thorns recorded with Ash Wednesday (The Models, Einstürzende Eeubauten) in 2015 and this is the result – the bands first full length album is released on
IN THE VAULT RECORDS on C.D and 180 gram 12 inch vinyl and features a special guest appearance by HUNTERS & COLLECTORS trumpet maestro Jack Howard.

Marilyn Rose and The Thorns have played on stages large and small to enthusiastic crowds around Melbourne’s renowned live music scene at venues such as The Esplanade Hotel, The St Kilda Bowling Club, The Prince of Wales Hotel, The Greyhound Hotel, Yah Yah’s, The Lyrebird Lounge, The Town Hall Hotel, Cherry Bar, The Tote and The Great Britain Hotel as well as appearing on the local female band showcase gig known as “Goddess”, St.Kilda’s own premier local live music event “A Day By The Green” and also The Kim Salmon Living Legend’s Tribute @ The Tote.

Prepare yourself to be seduced by the hypnotic vocals of leading lady, Marilyn Rose and rocked by the dark and dazzling musicianship of her band of Thorns as well as an assemblage of musical nomads at Lyrebird Lounge, Friday 4 December. Doors: 7.30.Free entry!

ZIKORA to launch GOLDEN THREAD live at Thornbury Theatre 3 December

Zikora – mending broken hearts with their debut single Golden Thread from their new namesake EP

Melbourne trio Zikora are celebrating the release of their first single Golden Thread from their long-awaited debut namesake EP with a special launch gig and a stunning animated video clip made by Simon Howe from No Such Place.

Zikora will host their debut EP launch on Thursday December 3rd 2015 at 8pm (doors 7:30pm) at The Thornbury Theatre in Melbourne, 859 High St, Thornbury, Victoria. Tickets to the launch are $15 presale or $20 at the door and are available at www.thethornburytheatre.com

Golden Thread was produced, recorded and mixed by Aria and Golden Guitar-nominated producer mixer and engineer Jimi Maroudas (Kimbra/Eskimo Joe/ Bertie Blackman) and recorded at Sing Sing South studios in Melbourne.

The song tells the tale of an old woman who can mend broken hearts. The animation unfolds as a young woman comes to the old woman’s house and is transformed as her heart is taken from her chest, healed with love, and sewn physically with magical golden thread in a gruesome but beautiful fashion akin to childbirth. The song is brought to life via world-class animation that “makes you feel like you’re stepping into a world that resonates so strongly with a past you would rather forget, and a healing that you have personally longed for many times before,” says Talia Browne, percussionist from Zikora.

An alternative-pop band with a twist, Zikora’s eclectic background has roots in classical training, West African-inspired rhythms and musical theatre. Zikora creates an unusual and intriguing mix of harp, percussion, keys and vocals featuring Talia Browne on percussion, harpist and singer Emily Rosner and singer/pianist and flautist Ellisa Scott.

Zikora’s extended recording line-up boasts some of Melbourne’s finest musicians who bring their magic to this stunning single with guests Andrew Fry, former John Butler Trio bassist, Xani Kolac of The Twoks and Mike Mills from Toehider.

“‘Unconventional’ hardly begins to describe their lineup…Very likely not like anything you’ve heard before” – Kim Lajoie (Obsessive Music/SkyLashes)

“Zikora have a unique sound…their distinctive sonic landscape proves to be the perfect backdrop to wonderful storytelling in their songwriting– Jimi Maroudas

BIO

Brothers Matt (Vocals/Bass) and Nathan Savage (Drums) provide a powerful rhythm section augmented by accomplished guitarist Billy Watts (son of the late Robbie ‘Rocket’ Watts, former guitarist of Aussie-punk legends Cosmic Psychos).
Outfitted in Dr Martens, tight jeans and glitter, the Melbourne based three-piece are quickly building a reputation as a distinctly theatrical live band with a sound influenced by early 80s post- punk. It is a unique blend, reminiscent of the new wave of the late 70s and early 80s with a gentle touch of gothic hysteria.

In the short time since forming, DESTRENDS has shared the stage with Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees/ Queens of the Stone Age) at his sold out Melbourne show, toured with Stonefield on their recent national tour and performed at King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s inaugural Dawn of Gizzfest at the Corner Hotel.

Ade Vincent presents The Raven – film clip and album available for review and purchase now

The Raven is an art-folk song-cycle setting of Edgar Allan Poe‘s poem of the same name. It is the debut solo album from composer and performer Ade Vincent (The Tiger & Me).

Songwriter and composer Ade Vincent’s obsession with Poe’s classic poem has been spilling over into much of what he writes for several years.

Other Friends Have Flown Before, the popular album-closer from The Tiger & Me’s The Drifter’s Dawn, takes its title and several lines from the poem, while other references can be found throughout many songs and pieces. With his debut solo album he takes his fascination with the work to the ultimate conclusion, using the poem in its entirety as lyrics for an album of ‘art-folk’ songs.

Voice, piano, guitar, ukulele, violin, cello, oboe and percussion combine across pop, folk, contemporary classical and minimalism; echoes of Chopin through to Andrew Bird are present.

French visual artist Luca Valente provides a stunning animation for the single My Chamber Door. Drawing on cubism, futurism and Songye tribal art, the stark black and white imagery captures the spirit of the original while providing a new and exciting interpretation.

Ade Vincent is a composer and performer. His music can be broadly separated into three categories: he writes and performs pop music (mostly for/with indie pop band The Tiger & Me), he writes contemporary classical music for the concert hall and music for screen. His music has been heard everywhere from popular television shows (Winners & Losers, The Time of Our Lives), the cinema screen (The Turning – cinematic trailer), music festivals (Port Fairy, The Falls) and concert halls (Hamer Hall, Deakin Edge).

James Teague presents new single ‘When The World Divides’ ahead of national album tour for ‘Beyond The Melting Dawn’

jamesteague

Poet and singer/songwriter James Teague is pleased to announce his national tour and new track ‘When the World Divides’ – the 2nd single from his upcoming album ‘Beyond The Melting Dawn’.

“I love performing in venues that are conducive to a deeper connection with the audience. Melbourne will be treated to a full band show in an underground art space. The rest of the tour will consist of intimate house concerts, showcasing my songs in their naked form, just as they were conceived.”

Following the successful release of his debut album ‘Lavender Prayers’, James relocated to Melbourne and teamed up with acclaimed producer and multi-instrumentalist Tony Dupé (Grand Salvo, Jack Ladder, Holly Throsby) to create his second album ‘Beyond the Melting Dawn’; a vast, sonic wonderland of vivid textures and secret ruminations, mirroring the duality of day and night – the light and dark within.

Sprawling over 50 minutes, it features some of Teague’s finest vocal and instrumental arrangements, acting as the perfect backdrop for his lyrical incantations.

The companion music video for When the World Divides is a vivid explorative piece built to highlight the message and the music, directed by Jenna Eriksen and featuring projections by Jesse Taylor Smith. The camera’s focus is a live portrait of James sitting, gradually adorned with shafts of light and colour from Jesse’s projections, blurring the lines of reality and James himself.

Bio:

James Teague is a Perth-born poet and singer-songwriter who is undeniably unique from other artists in the Australian music scene, existing in a world of his own. Inspired by literary figures such as Dylan Thomas, Hermann Hesse and Edgar Allen Poe, James writes songs that capture the existential angst with which the human soul is forever bound. His music is as complex as the self; one moment whimsical and dreamy, with shades of 60s psychedelia and 70s progressive folk – the next, wrought with mortal gloom and adorned with hints of jazz and howling blues. It’s difficult to describe Teague’s style, but it usually consists of unpredictable melodies that stray, intricate, dynamic arrangements and a soaring, vocal tremolo.

Live from New York City – Song and Dance Man Mark Nadler announces Australian Tour Across Three States, Featuring Two Separate Productions!

Helpmann Award nominee, New York City-based singer, comedic pianist and raconteur Mark Nadler makes his Sydney and Melbourne debuts when he presents ‘LET’S MISBEHAVE – A Cole Porter Soiree’ at The Camelot Lounge, Sydney on 20th August and at The Salon at Melbourne Recital Centre on 22nd August. Mark will also perform his intimate and unscripted ‘In A Nutshell’ show at La Boheme Cabaret, Adelaide, where he has already made an indelible mark as a headliner at Adelaide Cabaret Festival in previous years. So indelible, in fact, that the locals refer to the town as NAD-alaide when Nadler is in town!

If Victor Borge and Peter Allen had a child, it would be Mark Nadler. Mark plays the piano with fire and virtuosity, sings songs that range from touching ballads to outrageous comedy while playing the piano and singing.

“An immensely talented latter day Al Jolson … Mr. Show Business!” – Stephen Holden of The New York Times.

LET’S MISBEHAVE – A Cole Porter Soiree

MELBOURNE & SYDNEY SHOWS!

Internationally acclaimed Mark Nadler – who has
played New York City’s Town Hall and every significant night-club in New York City and Los Angeles, as well as touring England, Ireland, Scotland, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Israel and Australia, will explore the wit, romance and the life of arguably the greatest of American songwriters: Cole Porter.

Songs featured in ‘Mark Nadler LET’S MISBEHAVE – A Cole Porter Soiree’ include timeless hits “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall In Love)”, “In The Still Of The Night” and “You’re The Top” as well as many lesser known gems.

Mark Nadler’s I’m a Stranger Here Myself won the 2013 Nightlife Award and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and two Broadway World Awards. The show was also presented at The Adelaide Cabaret Festival and nominated for the prestigious Helpmann Award. Mark Nadler’s Broadway Hootenanny has become a staple of the Adelaide Festival, performed an unprecedented six times.

Mark Nadler has performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra and has been a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Oregon Symphony, National Arts Centre Symphony in Ottawa and others. At Philadelphia’s 14,000 seat Mann Centre for the Performing Arts, Mark did a solo two-act evening with the New York Pops, as well as Three Singular Sensations with Marvin Hamlisch and Martin Short.

Mark NadlerIn a Nutshell- ADELAIDE ONLY!
Mark Nadler returns to Adelaide to present ‘Mark Nadler In a Nutshell’ 13-15 August at La Boheme Cabaret.

“This is not going to be scripted in the slightest. Last year I played a very small club in New York called Noctambulo. No guest artists. No other instrumentalists. Just me at the piano with about 40 guests. Well, it turned out to be as much fun as I’ve had on stage in a long time and the audiences just loved it, so this is what I’m going to be doing in Adelaide. Every show will be different, although I’m sure that there are some pieces I’ll repeat.”
