HOODOO GURUS TO HEADLINE THE AGE EG AWARDS 2011
The Age EG is thrilled to announce legendary Australian band the Hoodoo Gurus as this year’s inductees into The Age EG Hall of Fame and the headline act for the 2011 Age EG Awards at the Prince Bandroom in St Kilda on Wednesday, November 23.
The Hoodoo Gurus were formed in Sydney in 1981 by Dave Faulkner, Brad Shepherd , James Baker and Clyde Bramley. The Gurus gave Australia such anthemic pop-rock gems as Leilani, Tojo, My Girl, I Want You Back, Bittersweet, Like Wow-Wipeout!, Miss Free Love ‘69 and What’s My Scene?. They will join their rock n’ roll colleagues Paul Kelly, Painters and Dockers, Died Pretty, Kim Salmon and TISM as the sixth act chosen by EG staff for the EG Hall of Fame in loving memory of former Age journalist and one-time EG editor Steve Waldon.
“We are very proud to include the Gurus, who gave us such brilliant albums as Mars Needs Guitars!, Blow your Cool! and Magnum Cum Louder, to our very exclusive Hall of Fame” says EG editor Jo Roberts. “Each year this night gets better and better and the Awards night gig has earned legendary status among discerning Melbourne music fans. After last year’s awards, Beat magazine said ‘you’d be hard-pressed to find anything else with this much spontaneity, or heart, in the musical calendar and that really sums it up. The EG Awards are a labour of love.”
Dave Faulkner was on hand at the 2008 EG Awards to induct friends and peers Died Pretty into the EG Hall of Fame. “It was like one big party, he said, “It’s a good one. It has the thing of not being industry- like, even though it is part of the industry…the EG Awards are different.”
Triple R’s own Jon Von Goes will host the awards this year, which will be opened by the four-sister phenomenon that is Victoria’s own Stonefield who this year have already wowed audiences from Glastonbury to LA’s Roxy. The sizzling house band the EG All-Stars (including Pete Luscombe, Dan Luscombe, Ash Naylor and Bill McDonald) will be performing along with other guest stars on the night, TBA.
Eight of the 10 EG Awards are chosen by EG readers, making it the largest reader-voted music awards in Australia, with last year’s online voting drawing a record 45,000 votes.
This year Patrick Donovan, Music Victoria CEO and Founder of the Age EG Awards will present two awards on the night – details TBA.
Online voting for the 6th Annual EG Awards opens on Friday October 7 at theage.com.au/entertainment.
Tickets are $45 and on sale at the Prince Bandroom website, princebandroom.com.au or through Moshtix.
The Age EG Awards is sponsored by rock legends Coopers Brewery and Triple R and new sponsors Crumpler and Allans Music+Billy Hyde. All profits go to Support Act Limited.

DAVIDSON BROTHERS LAUNCH NEW ALBUM ‘HERE TO STAY’ IN VICTORIA
Australia’s hottest bluegrass act, the Davidson Brothers released their brand new album Here To Stay on July 1.
Here To Stay contains eleven original tracks, ten of them written by Victorian based brothers Hamish and Lachlan. “We’ve managed to capture something of the energy of our live show on this record and it is our best yet,” said Lachlan.
Sharing the lead vocals, the Davidson Brothers shine on banjo, fiddle and mandolin and are supported by some of their favourite Nashville musicians on this release.
The songs on Here To Stay are old and new – steeped in bluegrass tradition, but with the patented Davidson Brothers energy. It’s Blue Grass, but it’s also New Grass. Check out the scorching 180 beat per minute banjo instrumental OMFG for a sample of what you will hear at a live gig!
Other stand out tracks include My Heart Can’t Believe My Eyes which is a classic heartbreak story written in traditional bluegrass style. Write Me A Letter is a song about loneliness that addresses the lack of personal interaction in the age of technology. Victoria expresses home state pride and the Double Plugger Strut is a stompin’ mandolin tune influenced by Australian culture.
Finalists in the 2010 Melbourne Prize for Most Outstanding Musicians, the Davidson Brothers traveled to Nashville to work on their fourth project with producer Mark Thornton and this time joined by Larry Marrs as coproducer. Mark played guitar with Jerry Reed for twelve years and Larry is a talented Kentucky native and has toured with the likes of George Jones, Randy Travis and Marty Stuart.
With two Golden guitar awards to their name and a handful of Australian Bluegrass Championship titles, Hamish and Lachlan are favourites at many folk and country festivals nation-wide and have also appeared on Spicks and Specks, Carols By Candelight, CMAA Golden Guitar Awards and Bert Newton’s Good Morning Australia.
The Davidson Brothers aren’t yet 30 years old, but they have toured Europe taking the music they love to a whole new generation of music lovers and are highly regarded in the bluegrass scene in the US.
“It has been an honour to be invited to perform back with Ralph Stanley (Oh Brother Where Are Thou) and to play in the backyard at the boyhood home of Bill Monroe. For weeks afterward, you couldn’t have smacked the smiles off our faces with a baseball bat,” says Hamish.
The Davidson Brothers played on The Man From Snowy River soundtrack; represented Australia at the IBMA International Bluegrass Fanfest in the USA (2004, 2007, 2008); and have toured with the likes of Lee Kernaghan and Troy Cassar-Daley who described them as “…the best young Blue Grass Pickers we have seen for a long while in Australia and a very exciting live act”.

FROM THE WEBMASTER
This website has been down for about a month because our web host was destroyed (literally) by a malicious hack attack. The host kept no backups off-site, so 5,000 clients were wiped off the map. This website / blog has been reassembled and reformatted from bits and pieces, like Foghorn Leghorn reassembling his numbered feathers. There are many posts missing, mainly from this year, all gone to that big Website in the Sky. We will smooth out remaining rough edges as we go, but Karen wanted to get back up online as soon as physically possible, so here we are, back on air. — S.

POP GOES THE CURFEW!
Local hipsters and music afficinados will be familiar with Pure Pop Records in Barkly Street St Kilda and their famous beer garden gigs, which have regularly hosted local musical glitterati such as Conway Savage, Charles Jenkins & Tim Rogers, along with bands from all around Australia including The Gin Club, Halfway, Steve Kilbey and Kate Miller-Heidke amongst others.
Their intimate stage has also hosted international artists including Barry Adamson, Academy Award winners The Swell Season, Charlie Parr and Dean & Britta (Luna/Galaxie 500) for over 5 years.
Pure Pop is possibly the only record store, cafe, live music venue in the world – and they have heaps of devoted local patrons to prove it. The beer is cold, the staff is friendly and the music is beyond awesome….
in fact the only complaint that has ever been leveled about a Pure Pop gig is that they fill up too quickly because the courtyard is only licensed for 50 bodies at a time and gigs have to end early, due to Council’s curfew.
With this in mind, store owners Dave Stevens & Elaine May have decided to expand for one night only and hold a gig featuring their favourite musicians at the Prince Bandroom in St Kilda.
They invited the entire Pure Pop mailing list to help them name the show and the winning entry was Pop Goes The Curfew.
Dave and Elaine are thrilled to announce one of their favourite bands, The Men, is “jetting in, direct from Sweden to headline the gig!”
The Men is a Mod outfit from Lund, Sweden and they were the first artists ever to record on the Pure Pop label, circa 2003, and are flying to Oz by special request to kick off the festivities. They’re known as something of a small “supergroup” since they formed out of four already established Swedish garage bands, The Sinners, The Girls, Thee Expression and Colubrids.
The sum of their parts is The Men – the ultimate live-band; explosive, stylish, tight, groovy, cool and fun – no shoegazers!
They will be joined by the mighty Gun Street Girls and local favourites Pony Face. Special performances by Tim Rogers, Charles Jenkins, Jeff May, Ryan Coffey, Hugh of The Skybombers and Heath & Alex of Dirt River Radio fame will also feature at the gig and musically oriented comedy duo Anyone For Tennis will host the night.
“We can’t wait to throw open the doors at the Prince Bandroom, listen to loads of great loud music, drink too much and not have to clean up afterwards!”
Get tickets to Pop Goes The Curfew at Pure Pop Records, 221 Barkly St in St Kilda or online at www.purepop.com.au or www.princebandroom.com.au for $20.00 plus bf.
See you there!
For more info, interviews or sounds from The Men please ring Karen Conrad on 0400 527 365.
