PRESENTATION NIGHT

Whereby PAUL KELLY and BOB MURPHY discuss music, football (and life) at

THE CORNER HOTEL, WEDNESDAY 10TH JULY

Part of the Leaps & Bounds Music Festival

Hosted by FRANCIS LEACH

‘Presentation Night’ is a live talk show that takes football and music as starting points for a discussion about our great obsessions – love, life, how to win the flag and great albums. It’s about learning something new about our heroes, ourselves, and how kicking a ball and writing songs define us.  It all happens live on stage at The Corner Hotel, Richmond.

Under the warm glow of the spotlight, PAUL KELLY (legendary singer/songwriter, author, Norwood FC supporter) and BOB MURPHY (legendary Western Bulldog, newspaper columnist, music fan) come together to discuss their mutual love of music and footy at length in ways that are philosophical, funny and surprising.

Ably guided by music and sport obsessive FRANCIS LEACH (ABC Grandstand Breakfast), Presentation Night will tackle the big issues: what similarities are there between the professional musician and the professional footballer? How do friendships form in footy and in music? Is there any similarity in the discipline of training and in forcing oneself to sit down and write a song? Is there any room for the true maverick in either field any more? Let’s find out about Bob’s favourite albums and Paul’s favourite footballers – and much, much more.

‘Presentation Night’ was born of desire to talk about two much-loved obsessions together in a public forum. In a football and music-loving town where the two pursuits are so often followed with equal passion, it makes perfect sense. To have two greats in their field talk about their love of both capers together gives us a chance to learn something new about them beyond the usual reportage of their endeavors.

Their conversation will last longer than a tweet – and that’s the point. A bit of meandering and a touch of digression will be encouraged.  It’s the equivalent of the slow food movement for Sherrin kickers and string strokers.  It’s a chance to learn something new about the role that footy and music play in our protagonists’ lives, and with a bit of luck, maybe even a bit about how kicking a ball and writing songs can come to define us.

The inaugural Leaps and Bounds Music Festival kicks off on Friday 5 – Sunday 21 July.

WHTSQR LAUNCHES ‘THE THINGS SHE NEVER OWNED’ AT BAR 303, 30 JUNE

Whtsqr launches ‘The Things She Never Owned’ at Bar 303, 30 June.gig poster

Ladies and gentlemen,

It’s not every day someone just comes out of the shadows and hands you a collection of jewels. Rejoice, for this is such a day.

Listen once and be reminded a bit of break through ‘break-up’ albums like Sea Change or Blood on the Tracks.  Listen twice and the songs are under your skin for good.

‘The Things She Never Owned’ is the work of Whtsqr (“White Square”), the disemvowelled alter-ego of bedroom musician Guy Morton.

“Recording each of the songs on this album has been satisfying in itself, but I’m incredibly excited to be bringing this album to life by playing it with a fantastic band. There’s a magic to playing live that’s hard to beat.”

There are 12 original songs on the album – from the almost Astral Weeks-like Polythene Sky through the startling imagery of Melted Woman to the Countrydylanesque Midnight Souvlaki and the sparkling pop nugget No Mystery.

“These are beautiful songs, superbly delivered each and every time.” – Charles Jenkins

“The songs were so realised, melodic and confident that I started to wonder if this was actually a covers night of covers no-one knew” – David Nichols, Presenter 3RRR

“Great production quality, great song writing, great strings, just great. Love the lazy groove that is ‘Calm and Defenceless’. ‘No Mystery’ just doesn’t go long enough for mine. A masterpiece.” – Stephen Anderson, Presenter 3RRR

Whtsqr is

Guy Morton, vocals, rhythm guitar

Bob Spencer, guitar

Kevin Hunt, bass

Graham Maddicks, drums

Dave Milne, keyboards

Support act Dave Milne solo at 3:30pm, Whtsqr 4:30pm.

Dan Brodie releases special video made for fans, tour rescheduled due to health

Header_pics

“Sorry I can’t come and play for you right now. Here’s a video I made to make up for it.”— Dan Brodie.

Tear Us Down from critically acclaimed new album “Deep Deep Love.”

Dan Brodie’s new album “Deep Deep Love” has already received many glowing reviews. However, illness has caused a postponement of his launch tour.

To make up for it Dan has made a video of Tear Us Down from the album. Close up and personal, it is a minimalist, sparse setting for Dan to frame the song, which was shot and directed in only one take by Dave Larkin (Dallas Crane) earlier this month.

Dan said, “This clip isn’t about bells and whistles. It’s simple – you could call it kind of an anti-filmclip with no edits and little action, the focus is on the song.”

The clip had to be shot simply in part to conserve Dan’s energy and the result is intimate and visceral, all black and white beauty.

Dan hopes it goes some way to making up for the tour cancellation and offers heartfelt thanks for the understanding and support of his many friends.

Please enjoy.

Reviews for “Deep Deep Love”:

“This slow-burn album, characterised by intimate vocals, absorbing lyrics and graceful instrumentation, will gradually hook you into its pensive charms.”

Beat Magazine – Graham Blackley

“If Dan Brodie were an actor, he wouldn’t be the star of the show. He would be the guy the other actors on set wanted to hang out with, the guy the director would turn to when he needed a moment of inspiration to get the show on the road. This album… shows why Brodie was twice nominated for ARIA Awards.”

The Age – Martin Boulton

“Stunning guitar work and honest vocals… magnificent tension… a remarkable cohesiveness, with each piece contributing to the larger story. Deep Deep Love is a mature and poignant release.”

themusic.com.au – Jazmine O’Sullivan

“He has an incredible ability to tap into a vein that pulls directly at the listener’s heartstrings, and when he gets that right, he is as good as any of Australia’s most lauded troubadours.”

themusic.com.au – Dominique Wall

PEOPLE POWER SAVING THE SOUL OF ST KILDA – PURE POP RECORDS UPDATE

17490_560_366

A revival of St Kilda’s live music scene is gaining momentum, thanks to a handful of local business owners fighting gentrification of a suburb once a notorious breeding ground for Australian rock royalty.

This week music institution Pure Pop Records was rescued from the brink of noise regulation fate thanks to the music community chipping in to raise more than $55,000 to fund the soundproofed rebuild of the venue.

The St Kilda record store and music venue, run by the son of the late AC/DC’s Bon Scott, was forced to demolish it’s only gig space in March this year due to council noise regulations and the persistent complaints of one neighbour.

Famous Australian musicians Paul Kelly, Gotye, Tim Rogers, Ella Hooper & Kate Miller-Heidke were some of the near 700 supporters who invested their own dollars into ‘Buying A Brick’ to help rebuild the venue. Figurative bricks were sold to cover expensive soundproofing equipment necessary to keep the business operating.

Owner Dave Stevens explains “we were in dire straits when it came to funding the rebuild and we needed help. It was really difficult to lay my cards out on the table and admit defeat, but honesty and straight talking were the key to our survival.

You Am I frontman and Pure Pop regular Tim Rogers was in full support of the campaign. “The etymology of the word punter – being a part of an audience – is taking a punt on something, which is a courageous noble act. Buying a brick for Pure Pop is an investment in art and the livelihoods of local musicians” explained Rogers.

Over the years, St Kilda has been a renowned breeding ground to some of Australia’s most influential musicians; the late Rowland S Howard along with his Birthday Party bandmates (later to take over the world as Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds),AC/DC (who in their early days, shared a house in east St Kilda) have all called St Kilda home during their formative years. Australian music legends Paul Kelly and Tim Rogers both consider St Kilda home to this day.

The music scene revival, led by a handful of St Kilda stalwarts; backed by a united music community, has seen live music spread beyond the typical locations of the Esplande Hotel and Prince Bandroom. An ever increasing number of venues are reinstating themselves as important contributors to Melbourne’s live music scene.

The Prince Public Bar, St Kilda Bowling Club, The George’s underground Saloon Bar, Dogs Bar, Claypots and Lost On Barkly and Pure Pop Records are all venues leading the charge towards a less gentrified future of St Kilda.

St Kilda Memo, the 1924 art deco dance hall will also now be seeing more regular gigs off the back of a long await permit approval by the council. As well as the heartfelt tribute it held for the late Rowland S Howard recently.
