DAN BRODIE IS BACK! CD LAUNCH 16 MARCH – NORTHCOTE SOCIAL CLUB

It’s been awhile between drinks, but Dan Brodie is back at last.

And he’s ready to launch his newest album ‘Deep Deep Love’ on Sunday 16 March at a special matinee show at the Northcote Social Club, 301 High Street, Northcote.

Some of you may remember that Dan’s original album launch was scheduled exactly 1 day shy of this launch date in 2013!
Last year around this time, Dan had just put his latest critically acclaimed album ‘Deep Deep Love’ out to reviewers and radio stations and scheduled his launch when he was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma after an initial misdiagnosis of Whooping Cough.  Dan had to take a long break from gigging and songwriting to undergo heavy chemo and radiation treatments, and now he’s ready to take care of this unfinished business and bring ‘Deep Deep Love’ to a live audience.
“Chemo was brutal, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, but I kind of skipped having the ‘why me?’ conversation with myself and just got on with it.  Somewhere during the course of my treatment I realised that there are two worlds — the world inhabited by healthy people and the world of people who have chronic illnesses, which is a world of untold suffering and misery.  I feel very lucky to be on the other side of it now and I’m glad be able to quote Mark Twain and say that ‘Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated,'” said Dan.
‘Deep Deep Love’ contains eleven songs all written by Brodie over fifteen years in various locales, both overseas and closer to home.  The concept of the album came about when he realised how many songs hadn’t found homes on his previous records.

‘Deep Deep Love’ is an intimate affair, the songs unadorned by studio trickery or big production.  It finds Dan, a two time ARIA award winner who was described by The Age as the ‘former alt-country pinup boy of the noughties’  returning to the style that won his first fans over.

“These songs are my lost and found collection,” says Brodie. “Lean On Me was originally demoed for my band, The Broken Arrows and Falling For You was written in a St Kilda share house when I lived with Robbie Rocket (Cosmic Psychos), Shane Walsh and Ian Rilen back in the day.  Fallen Down Again is my attempt at an Ennio Morricone song, just because every songwriter ought to try at least one spaghetti western song in their career.”
★★★☆
If Dan Brodie were an actor, he wouldn’t be the star of the show. He would be the guy the other actors on set wanted to hang out with, the guy the director would turn to when he needed a moment of inspiration to get the show on the road. Take Tear Us Down from the Melbourne singer-songwriter’s fifth album, a song that bears no resemblance whatsoever to anything on his previous album, the gritty, dark and brooding My Friend the Murderer. Tear Us Down, Falling for You and the wonderful Lean on Me have Brodie in a contemplative, reflective mood, singing passionately about matters close to the heart. My Friend the Murderer was Brodie getting into character for a completely different role. This album features the beautiful backing vocals of Layla and Rhianna Fibbins, and shows why Brodie was twice nominated for ARIA Awards more than a decade ago and why he continues touring, writing and pushing himself in new directions.

CHARLES JENKINS & THE ZHIVAGOS NEW ALBUM RELEASED TODAY!

NEW ALBUM RELEASED TODAY!!!

“Water, drought and flood, the cooling drink, the dangerous current. Water is inevitably at the heart of the Australian story, and Charles Jenkins dives right in with new album Too Much Water In The Boat, a collection of songs inspired by our oceans and rivers and our relationship to them, from the twanging surf rock of The Prime Minister Is Missing to the humorous tale of a crossdressing bushranger and deeply emotional contemplations of love, loss, the search for the inland sea and hopes of a new life dashed on the rocks. One of Australia’s finest songwriters just keeps getting better with the years.”
Noel Mengel, The Courier-Mail. Brisbane

“Surfing the crest of the zeitgeist, songwriter Charles Jenkins delivers yet another sparkling musical distillation of life as it’s lived on this planet. His deft rhymes unfurl over deep oceans of melody to form wave after wave of pure listening pleasure. Cross-dressing bushrangers, dancing emus, and love amidst a tsunami all play a part in Jenkins’ singular and undeniably catchy worldview. Take the plunge and luxuriate in these epic waters!”
Peter Lubin – Producer/Writer, New York City

“Weigh the anchor and clear the decks . . . Charles Jenkins & The Zhivagos “Too Much Water…” is a masterpiece. From the broiling breakers of ‘The Prime Minister Is Missing’, the calenture-crazed Ahab leading Willard’s crew in ‘The Whale Song’ and the sunlit tree-top pop of ‘7 Creeks (The Crossdresser Steve Hart)’ to the ache and anger of ‘The Barrel Song’ and ‘Christmas Island’, this is no three hour tour – this is the sound of a fearless crew on the voyage of a lifetime. Welcome aboard. I’m calling it early – one of the albums of the year.”

April 19  – Recycled Roots Revolution  – Bendigo

Cigar box guitar. Dobro. Mandolin. Lap steel. There is nothing with strings that Justin Johnson does not simply shred like evidence.
Paul Schomer, NPR music producer

Hailed by Guitar World as a must see act and dubbed “The Wizard” for his mastery of stringed instruments, Justin Johnson has earned many accolades including a 1st place win in the Slidestock International Slide Guitar Competition.  His virtuosic playing style has earned him endorsements from guitar and instrument builders around the world.  Justin is also one of a select few guitarists that have been hand picked to perform for the Woodstock International Luthier’s Showcase in the USA, and the Deloraine Stringfest in Australia, highlighting the work of many of the finest acoustic guitar builders in the world.
Justin Johnson is one of the premier cigar box guitar performers playing today, highlighting the traditional American Roots instrument in a way that honors the history of the instrument while innovating new approaches by incorporating modern technology.  Justin expertly builds layers of music to create a full-band show as a soloist, incorporating up to a dozen stringed instruments including one-string diddley bows, acoustic and electric six-string guitars, twelve-string guitar, cigar box guitars, resonators, mandolin and percussion.
With a style firmly rooted in Blues tradition, but not afraid to break new ground, Justin’s unique sound is the direct result of his passion for combining and advancing widely varying musical forms from all corners of the world.  The result is a sound unlike any other: sincere and soulful explorations, waxing between playful romps across the strings, hauntingly pensive Gypsy dreamscapes, and gritty, driving Blues.
Justin has shared bills with many well-known acts such as The Allman Brothers, Victor Wooten, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Jeff Coffin, Widespread Panic, Matisyahu, Tim Reynolds and Chris Thomas King, among others.

HIGH TIDE FOR PAUL REID – NEW SINGLE AND TOUR ANNOUNCEMENT

Paul Reid is pleased to present his new single ‘High Tide,’ his first from the forthcoming five song EP ‘Vines’.

‘Vines’ is the result of a three year story for Paul; travelling, working and meeting new people that have had a long lasting effect and influence on the song writing and lyrical makeup of the record.
“Being a solo artist, you really have to surround yourself with good people who are going to help you. I’ve played with some great musicians on this EP and their advice and encouragement to back myself has really brought out the best in both me and these songs,” said Paul.
Paul Reid has been showcasing his lyrical compositions in Melbourne and regional Victoria for the past three years, often performing as a solo troubadour and sometimes with full band.
2013 saw the release of his debut self-titled three track EP and guest appearances on independent radio stations and street press magazines. Paul released his first music video for his ariose single ‘Seeds and Water,’ a career milestone last year.
‘Vines’ was recorded at Oxygen Studios and Milk Studios with Braiden Michetti of three-piece alternative band Sleep Parade.

TOO MUCH WATER IN THE BOAT – NEW CD FROM CHARLES JENKINS AND THE ZHIVAGOS

Too Much Water In The Boat The new album by Charles Jenkins and The Zhivagos Release Monday 17 Feb 2014 on Silver Stamp Records/Rocket Distribution

Australians have a special preoccupation with water due to its scarcity in some regions, its abundance in others and the way that we relate to it physically, emotionally and symbolically. Water encircles us, defines our borders and shapes our identities.

And so, here’s an album that undertakes an exploration into what water brings, and what it takes away. Half of the songs on ‘Too Much Water…’ deal with the ocean, the other half with our rivers. Songs examining everything from drought, climate change, tsunamis, asylum seekers, Prime Ministers going missing to the search for an inland sea, cross dressing bush rangers, the Snowy Mountains scheme and much more.

Says Charles, “Again it was recorded with the incredible Zhivagos, namely Dave Milne on drums, Art Starr on bass, Davey Lane on guitar and Matty Vehl on keyboards, all of whom jumped on board to lend their jaw dropping talents to this far fetched project, hone it, and bring it to life. Also, Greg Field dropped by to play some fiddle, Jack Howard played some trumpet on a duet I wrote with Suzannah Espie, so she gets roped in, as does my old Icecream Hands buddy, the extraordinary Douglas Lee Robertson singing harmony like no one else in this country can. All engineered and produced by my trusty sea captain, Justin Rudge, who also did Walk This Ocean and Love Your Crooked Neighbour With Your Crooked Heart”

The first taste of Too Much Water In The Boat is lead single ‘7 Creeks (The Crossdresser Steve Hart)’. A rollicking knees up, set where 7 creeks meet and the ensuing tall tales associated with the best looking member of the Kelly Gang, Steve Hart. Pre-orders receive an immediate download of the single!

Album pre-orders available from www.charlesjenkins.com.au from Monday 13 January

Album launch show at Northcote Social Club

Sunday March 2nd (Matinee Show)
