RnB GLITCH LORDS COLLARBONES PLAY 2 SAVE BABY RISS AT TOFF 2MORO 10 MARCH! B THERE!

Collarbones 3

COLLARBONES, The Harpoons, Brothers Hand Mirror & more come together to Save Baby Riss!

RnB glitch lords Collarbones have just been added to the bill to perform at Toff In Town 10 March to Save Baby Riss!

Marcus Whale gyrates lasciviously germinating the audience with the remains of his obsessive teen angst while Travis Cook controls the beats from behind a force field of sunglasses and faux revulsion for his audience. Listen in extra close for the between songs banter which perfectly captures Cook’s Nike Co-signed sarcasm and Whale’s loving unassuming honesty.

The Harpoons will be encouraging thrilling new explorations into the shapes a human body can conjure on the dance floor. Keeping it simple and well-performed is the ethic with The Harpoons,  as it is allowed to be when you have such percussive, happy-go-lucky guitar warbling, accompanied by a voice that is actually made of pure daylight.

Brothers Hand Mirror are also in the ranks with their sickeningly dank tape loops engineered by Oscar Key Sung being ridden with irresponsible glee by the shrill voiced, glitter endorsed HTMLflowers. expect a new free issue of HTMLflowers’ comix series Bright Threadz. Beware you don’t sweat them to shreds in your back pocket on the d-floor – it has happened before.

Major Napier‘s constant undulating synth arrangements maternally catered to by Johnny Ross’ sleek, climbing voice will be bringing the night into ceremony with sterling harmony.  organically humming and pummelling, his beats create an atmosphere of euphoria made honourable by a the remembrance of past regrets and love lost.

DJ sets by Andras Fox & Oscar Key Sung!

All of these acts are coming together in support of the campaign to Save Baby Riss.

Over the christmas holidays 19 year old Isabelle “Baby” Rissole was diagnosed with a rare life threatening blood disease called aHUS.

Since the illness is so rare there has not been a precedent for the government to subsidise the life saving medication needed to treat Baby. Currently it is costing her $20,000 dollars a fortnight for treatment, despite the fact that she is an australian citizen.

That’s $600,000 dollars a year.

In July a petition urging the Federal Government goes through to cover the medication Eculizumab, which would not just change Baby’s life but also the lives of many other Australians struggling with illnesses that would be treated by this miracle drug. Up until July the diligent network of friends, family and artists (Le1f & Cakes Da Killa to name a few) working to support Baby must raise over 200,000 dollars.

All of the proceeds from this event will go towards treatment for young Baby Riss.

Here is a press article that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald about Baby: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/teenager-isabelle-waits-for-panel-ruling-on-funding-of-lifesaving-drug/story-fnii5smt-1226821482695

INTRODUCING VCEnglish, YOUR MOBILE TUTOR

vce

Introducing VCEnglish, ‘your mobile tutor’

A new mobile app for VCE students created by local education specialist

We are very pleased to announce the new VCEnglish iPhone App for Victorian VCE English/EAL students — with an Android version coming soon!

This app has been created by experienced VCE teacher, Victorian English textbook author and English Exam assessor, Anne Mitchell.

Anne says, “I’ve never been in the business of creating apps until now, but I am in the education business and I realised there was a real need for students to have a VCE tutor on hand 24/7 through their mobile devices when I first noticed students were bringing tablets into classes instead of exercise books.

“I’m an old hand at all things VCE and textbooks but the world of apps was new to me. It took a lot longer and was a lot harder than I anticipated, but we really got it right and I’m absolutely thrilled with the final product.

“Every part of the app is a toolkit that everyone can start using right away, learning to study and write more effectively, immediately.

“There’s step by step instructions dealing with every part of the course in plain language. It’s functional, easy to navigate and users can even reach me in person to answer any questions via the vcenglish.com.au website.”

While developed primarily as a tool for VCE students, VCEnglish has also turned out to be a multi-function tool for anyone serious about getting the written English language right. English teachers, journalists, in fact every writer can benefit from the sections about spelling rules, punctuation, grammar and jargon

The iOS app is available from the Apple App Store for $8.49.

sexred

Sex On Toast are probably the greatest band on earth. They are nine men, and between them they possess all the raw sexual power of Prince, the musical prowess of James Brown and the cheesy goodness of an‘80s game show host. Sex On Toast bring the ruckus.” – themusic.com.au, Inpress Magazine. A nine man explosion of 1980’s pop music, yacht-rock, R’n’B, and synth-funk, Sex On Toast showcase undeniable musical finesse whilst never taking themselves too seriously.

Their outrageous live show features tight vocal harmonies, talk-box synthesizers, drum-machines and choreographed dance moves.  They’re consistently engaging an ever expanding audience of both chin-stroking musicians and teenage revellers.

Through word of mouth alone, Sex On Toast quickly become a cult favourite in Melbourne, regularly packing out local venues. The band has hosted several residencies at The Toff In Town, The Empress and The Evelyn Hotel, including a highly successful residency with the Vaudeville Smash in January 2013, and a sell-out residency in September 2012.

The band has featured at the Bedroom Philosopher’s “High School Assembly” Melbourne International Comedy Festival (2012),  ‘An Evening With Sex On Toast’ at the Adelaide Fringe (2012), Junction Festival Launceston (2012), and every year at The Village at Falls Festival since 2009 including both Marion Bay and Lorne festivals. DAN BRODIE IS BACK! CD LAUNCH 16 MARCH – NORTHCOTE SOCIAL CLUB

It’s been awhile between drinks, but Dan Brodie is back at last.

And he’s ready to launch his newest album ‘Deep Deep Love’ on Sunday 16 March at a special matinee show at the Northcote Social Club, 301 High Street, Northcote.

Some of you may remember that Dan’s original album launch was scheduled exactly 1 day shy of this launch date in 2013!
Last year around this time, Dan had just put his latest critically acclaimed album ‘Deep Deep Love’ out to reviewers and radio stations and scheduled his launch when he was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma after an initial misdiagnosis of Whooping Cough.  Dan had to take a long break from gigging and songwriting to undergo heavy chemo and radiation treatments, and now he’s ready to take care of this unfinished business and bring ‘Deep Deep Love’ to a live audience.
“Chemo was brutal, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, but I kind of skipped having the ‘why me?’ conversation with myself and just got on with it.  Somewhere during the course of my treatment I realised that there are two worlds — the world inhabited by healthy people and the world of people who have chronic illnesses, which is a world of untold suffering and misery.  I feel very lucky to be on the other side of it now and I’m glad be able to quote Mark Twain and say that ‘Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated,'” said Dan.
‘Deep Deep Love’ contains eleven songs all written by Brodie over fifteen years in various locales, both overseas and closer to home.  The concept of the album came about when he realised how many songs hadn’t found homes on his previous records.

‘Deep Deep Love’ is an intimate affair, the songs unadorned by studio trickery or big production.  It finds Dan, a two time ARIA award winner who was described by The Age as the ‘former alt-country pinup boy of the noughties’  returning to the style that won his first fans over.

“These songs are my lost and found collection,” says Brodie. “Lean On Me was originally demoed for my band, The Broken Arrows and Falling For You was written in a St Kilda share house when I lived with Robbie Rocket (Cosmic Psychos), Shane Walsh and Ian Rilen back in the day.  Fallen Down Again is my attempt at an Ennio Morricone song, just because every songwriter ought to try at least one spaghetti western song in their career.”
★★★☆
If Dan Brodie were an actor, he wouldn’t be the star of the show. He would be the guy the other actors on set wanted to hang out with, the guy the director would turn to when he needed a moment of inspiration to get the show on the road. Take Tear Us Down from the Melbourne singer-songwriter’s fifth album, a song that bears no resemblance whatsoever to anything on his previous album, the gritty, dark and brooding My Friend the Murderer. Tear Us Down, Falling for You and the wonderful Lean on Me have Brodie in a contemplative, reflective mood, singing passionately about matters close to the heart. My Friend the Murderer was Brodie getting into character for a completely different role. This album features the beautiful backing vocals of Layla and Rhianna Fibbins, and shows why Brodie was twice nominated for ARIA Awards more than a decade ago and why he continues touring, writing and pushing himself in new directions.
MARTIN BOULTON (The Age Newspaper, Australia, March 2013)
Dan Brodie will launch ‘Deep Deep Love’ with special guest Alysia Manceau
Sunday 16 March
Matinee Show – Doors 1.30pm
$15 + bf or $18 at the door if available

CHARLES JENKINS & THE ZHIVAGOS NEW ALBUM RELEASED TODAY!

NEW ALBUM RELEASED TODAY!!!

“Water, drought and flood, the cooling drink, the dangerous current. Water is inevitably at the heart of the Australian story, and Charles Jenkins dives right in with new album Too Much Water In The Boat, a collection of songs inspired by our oceans and rivers and our relationship to them, from the twanging surf rock of The Prime Minister Is Missing to the humorous tale of a crossdressing bushranger and deeply emotional contemplations of love, loss, the search for the inland sea and hopes of a new life dashed on the rocks. One of Australia’s finest songwriters just keeps getting better with the years.”
Noel Mengel, The Courier-Mail. Brisbane

“Surfing the crest of the zeitgeist, songwriter Charles Jenkins delivers yet another sparkling musical distillation of life as it’s lived on this planet. His deft rhymes unfurl over deep oceans of melody to form wave after wave of pure listening pleasure. Cross-dressing bushrangers, dancing emus, and love amidst a tsunami all play a part in Jenkins’ singular and undeniably catchy worldview. Take the plunge and luxuriate in these epic waters!”
Peter Lubin – Producer/Writer, New York City

“Weigh the anchor and clear the decks . . . Charles Jenkins & The Zhivagos “Too Much Water…” is a masterpiece. From the broiling breakers of ‘The Prime Minister Is Missing’, the calenture-crazed Ahab leading Willard’s crew in ‘The Whale Song’ and the sunlit tree-top pop of ‘7 Creeks (The Crossdresser Steve Hart)’ to the ache and anger of ‘The Barrel Song’ and ‘Christmas Island’, this is no three hour tour – this is the sound of a fearless crew on the voyage of a lifetime. Welcome aboard. I’m calling it early – one of the albums of the year.”
Pat Monaghan – Basement Discs, Melbourne

You can get it here   http://www.charlesjenkins.com.au

If you’re in Melbourne this Friday 21st February, you can catch Charles and a couple of those wonderful Zhivagos – Davey Lane and Matty Vehl  – at a lunchtime performance -12.45pm at Basement Discs.

See you there, Melbourne people!
