Piano jazz trio Refraction will launch their highly anticipated second release ‘Inerrant Space’ at Bennett’s Lane on 19 May at 8pm.

Drawing inspiration from the sensibilities of pop lyricism and melody, Refraction melds the various colours of contemporary jazz composition and improvisation together into a compelling musical soundscape. Centred around drummer and leader Chris Broomhead’s compositions, the trio celebrates the sanctity of simplicity, upholding the primacy of a song’s melody while leaving space for collective ensemble interaction and improvisation.

The band draws inspiration from influences Tord Gustavsen, Esbjorn Svensson, Robert Glasper and Weather Report with original pieces that hold a clear vision that makes the journey the very destination the music is seeking.

Their live performance has been perfected at Melbourne venues including The Paris Cat, Bennetts Lane (including a three-week residency), Uptown Jazz Cafe and Open Studio.

‘Inerrant Space’ features 10 new contemporary jazz compositions all written by Chris Broomhead, pianist Brenton Foster (Max Savage, Independent) and double bassist Jordon Tarento. It was recorded at Burwood Sound Studios, Melbourne over two days in
December 2015
and engineered by Allan Neuendorf and Chris Broomhead
, edited and mixed by Chris Broomhead and mastered by Lachlan Carrick.

Join J M S Harrison and Backyard for a special double launch matinee show at Workers Club 14 May, 1pm as they team up to share their releases with the world (Melbourne).

You may have seen Melbourne based singer/songwriter J M S Harrison’s name recently as a performer at any one of the several sold out tribute shows he has been busy putting on 3 sold out tributes in the last few months, including a PJ Harvey album anniversary show at Northcote SC for Darebin Music Feast, two David Bowie tributes at NSC and Corner Hotel and an epic album anniversary show for The Smiths happening at Corner Hotel.

But you may not have seen him in his best guise of all, playing his own new music from his luminous new album ‘Tales Surround The Lighthouse Lamp.’

Recorded at Crosstown Studios, “Tales Surround The Lighthouse Lamp” features 12 sparkling new tracks and will be available exclusively on CD at the show, followed by digital release the week after.

At the same show, Backyard will be officially launching their 7″ vinyl Young and Old, after building up much hype on the scene playing shows across Melbourne since 2014.

Joining these two acts on the day will be very special guests Christopher Coleman Collective, Luke Shields (Have/Hold), Eli Cash and Hayley Couper.
