Lake Minnetonka have embraced the iso-video trend and, during this gigless
stretch, produced two cover songs with accompanying film clips. Both feature
special guests Tom Munn on vocals and Kathleen Halloran (Kate Ceberano) on bass. The videos were produced, filmed, directed, and edited by bandleader Adam Rudegeair at Funk Noir HQ in Hawthorn, Melbourne.
“Funklords Lake Minnetonka have been bringing infectious jazz riffs and bouncing funk beats to Melbourne since 2013, jetting between hometown Melbourne and the soulful Minneapolis that has been influencing their sound.”—Speaker TV
High Fashion is a Minneapolis Funk classic from The Family’s eponymous 1985 album (which also contained the original version of Nothing Compares 2 U). The originals vocalist, St Paul Peterson, is Minneapolis musical royalty, and frequent collaborator with Lake Minnetonka (he played bass on the Melbourneapolis album and will also feature on their forthcoming sophomore LP).
Dancin’ at the Bains Douches is a little-known but infectious banger by Kid Creole and the Coconuts: an ode to the Bains Douches, the go-to Parisian nightclub in the 80s and 90s.
About Lake Minnetonka:
Lake Minnetonka have crafted a slick and funky contemporary Melbourne take on the Minneapolis Sound (made famous by the likes of Prince, Janet Jackson, Sheila E, and The Time).
Their debut album Melbourneapolis (“Melbourne-apolis”) fuses funk, jazz and new wave into an irreverent sonic explosion. The follow-up EP Honey Garden features four tracks co-written with Francoise d’Argent (FOSSEY, Silver Linings).
In 2019, Lake Minnetonka released Year of the Bat a 20-minute concept film celebrating Batman’s 80th anniversary and 30 years of Prince’s film soundtrack.
Lake Minnetonka’s second full-length release is due later this year and features guest spots from Dr Fink (Prince and the Revolution) and St Paul Peterson (The Time, fDeluxe).
